The PARables®
by Michael E. Evans
Dedicated to the proposition that there is no such thing as a good lie; and if you can save par from where you are, then Jesus can save you from anything.
MULLIGAN!!
I played golf with a Korean businessman in San Antonio, TX a few years ago. He spoke hardly any English and mumbled little more than an occasional "Good shot!" all day long.
On number fourteen, he snap hooked one into parts unknown and just as the ball was sailing out of sight he yelled clearly and quite articulately; "MULLIGAN!!!"
Now, before you go looking at the USGA rules of golf, a mulligan is illegal. That notwithstanding, it is a concept employed by golfers around to world to undo ugly mistakes on the course. It is a do over. A chance to correct a problem. It is another shot without penalty. It is a golfers 1 John 1:9.
Don't try to use a mulligan in a tournament. You will be disqualified. Some golf courses actually forbid them. It is not uncommon to see signs that say: "NO MULLIGANS!" (They slow down play and taint the integrity of the game.) Some even say they make it that much harder to become a good golfer.
But if you are among friends. You know, people who are not out to beat you. If you are playing with people who just enjoy your company whether you are a good golfer or not. Such people's love will cover a multitude of sins -- not to mention bad shots. When you are among friends, mulligans are not only allowed, they are often encouraged.
My Korean friend reloaded as the sound of his shout was echoing in the distance in a curious couterpoint with his ball ricocheting from tree to tree. His next shot found the fairway, and I found myself smiling and thinking; If you're only going to learn two expressions in a foreign tongue, one should be to encourage (Good shot!) and the other should be to forgive. (MULLIGAN!!)
Need a few mulligans in the game of life?
You’re only four strokes away!!
1. Acknowledge that you are a sinner. (Rom. 3:23)
2. Ask God to forgive you. (1 Jn. 1:9/Rom. 10:8-10)
3. Be willing to change. (Rom. 12:1,2)
4. Invite Jesus to be Lord of your life. (Jn. 3:3-7)
