Honoring God at the Piano, Part 1
Leah K. Oxendine

If you are like me, you want to learn as much as you can, play all the songs that you've always wanted to play, and rise to the highest you can when it comes to piano.
But it's really not about those things!
WHAT? It's not about trying to play your best? No! Trying your hardest is good, but it's not what playing the piano is all about. It's not about how sincere you are, or how much you practice. It's not even about what songs you play!
Guess what! No matter what instrument you play, no matter how greatly you play it, it's no good at all if it's not done for the glory of God, the Maker of everythingˇ including music!
Do you ever stop to think about the great composers such as Bach, Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Joplin, and the incredible music that was composed by them?
Often I have looked over their music, played a few songs and wondered wherever in the world one could think up such melodies and tunes.
Sometimes I even wish I had thought some of them up first! Well, I was in for a surprise. The Holy Spirit struck me with a thought that lingered in my mind. These men did not write their music.
Well then, who did?
I heard in my head, "God is the ultimate composer and the creator of music."
Ah-ha! So THAT'S the answer! So, these great men merely copied down what was given them! The TRUE composer was the Creator of the Universe! Well, there's something else to add to the list of things that God can do. He's not only the greatest Artist, Author, Sculptor, King and Creator, but He's also a COMPOSER!
He knew what music would be composed before the composer was even born; and when the composing took place, HE WAS THERE, GIVING THAT PERSON THE NOTES THAT THEY WOULD WRITE DOWN. HE GAVE THEM THAT FLOW OF INSPIRATION, WHICH COMPOSERS FEEL AND THINK. As little Mozart brought out his father's manuscript paper and wrote down an extravagant phrase of music, God was giving his small mind the creativity to do so.
But people play a part in this, they have to work and think up the music, it's not just God opening the door of their mind and pushing in the music He wanted written down, You may be thinking.
Simple answer! When God gives us inspiration to do anything, whether it be writing a poem, singing a song or serving others, (the list could go on and on!) He doesnˇ¦t just let us sit back and let Him do the work. Sometimes, God gives you the beginnings for a perfect poem or article. You write a little with the thought given you but then you find something else to do, push that old project aside, forget about it and therefore lose it because of your lack of taking on the job.
Whenever God gives you inspiration, don't let it go to waste! You may think you're not creative in composing music, arranging hymns or even playing a particular song. Cast that thought aside! You never know what lies in store for you, and there may be something that the Lord wants you do. And remember, you have another thing in common with your Creator. He knows music, and is the maker of it!
Always use the piano to give Him the glory He deserves.
