A WINTER’S FROST
By Kim Robarge
As winter’s frost settled on my window and it snowed upon my pane,
Chills and darkness gripped this house sapped of fires flame,
While in my bed I lay, tossing side to side,
In my sleepiness, “Let the sunrise do its work,”
I mumbled, turned and sighed.
But uncharitable as it now was, my conscience held me true,
So halfheartedly rising I stoked the fire and on the embers blew.
Soon all through the house pleasing warmth did spread,
Provoking me to question why I laid so long in bed.
As winter’s frost settled on my window and it snowed upon my pane,
God taught me a soul is a window to Heaven that wants a light and flame.
And in it He had specially lit a candle when I accepted Him.
Well over time frost had settled on my soul and sleepiness chilled my prayers,
My heart had grown dry as a stick, so cold, a dried up fountain for tears;
Now the road to recovery seemed impossible for it’s been so many years.
Then unexpectedly, with a voice of sweetest mercy I heard God say,
“I promise to pour my Spirit out, but first you must rise and pray.”
As winter’s frost settled on my window and it snowed upon my pane,
Once again I heard God speak and his words now fell like rain,
“I haven’t forgotten you my son, nor forsaken you my child,
Though like a weed you’ve sprung up quickly and ran quite wild,
Yet when you return to me you’re always reconciled.
So stir up the gift I’ve given you, call down the heavenly fire,
Show great faith that sues me for my promises that you so desire;
Bask in my presence, bank on my love,
Set all your affections on things up above.
Command me to breathe upon your heart and cause the flame to swell;
Come closer, climb higher till all your joys be filled.
Begin each day on your knees and for my presence yearn;
Drink in my Spirit, sing forth my praises, and let your tongue now burn.
Enjoy the treasure of my love like a newly-wedded bride;
Knit yourself to me and in my Word abide.
Then you will understand your purpose and your life will not be lived in vain,
When winter’s frost settles on your window and it snows upon your pane.”
