We frequently speak of having freedom in America, but we hardly ever define what is meant by the word “freedom”.

To some, ‘freedom’ is the opportunity to exercise their skills and talents in an environment where they are not persecuted. This is a limited freedom and is the appropriate view of freedom.

Some define the term ‘freedom’ in the sense of having the right to do anything they want to do; having no rules except what seems right to them at the moment. However, the result of this kind of thinking is anarchy and chaos.

There is no such thing as ‘absolute freedom’. We all must operate within the boundaries of certain sets of rules: our employer’s rules where we work, the rules of the road where we drive, and the laws of physics all around us. A world without rules would be brutal and uninhabitable.

There are also rules in the moral and spiritual rules. These are standards and guidelines by which the universe was design to operate.

Since we are all under a set of rules, the question is: to whose rules will we submit?

The Bible says that we should seek to know and obey the moral principles presented to us by our Creator and Sustainer…God.

Mankind complains about the conditions of our existence on this planet while, at the same time, rebelling against, and disobeying, the very Entity that would correct that malady.

It is possible to rebel against any set of rules. However, if those rules were put in place to protect us, as most rules are, then to rebel against them will result in negative consequences. This is the condition of lost mankind in our day; rebelling against God and His rule in order to follow the selfish desires of our own.

God calls our rebellion against Him…sin. The Bible tells us that our relationship with God has been ruined by sin and can only be repaired through a saving relationship with Jesus Christ.

God sent Jesus Christ to die on the cross in order to pay for our sins. Our responsibility is to, “Love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind and body.” This brings us into a correct eternal relationship with God.

Then we can consider ourselves free IN God, not free FROM God. Then we can live our lives the way they were designed to be lived.
