Healing

Its easy to slip into vain glory when we are doing something really wonderful. Pride is what motivates our desire to receive accolade or admiration for what we do. It also usually tempts us to insist on being better at something than anyone else when it's most wise just to compete with one self. Evidently, pride stirs the sufferer to feel bitter at someone else's success and happiness.

In contrast, Christ's answer to anyone seeking a position of distinction in his Kingdom always involves humility and a genuine love for service ( Matthew 6 verse 1 : Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will not have reward from your Father in heaven.) Pride has a way of silently sipping through our protective walls, its almost impossible to win any struggle against it unless we persistently pray for His guidance. In Matthew 11;29 he says, Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. He offers healing from the repercussions of pride. Rest from the vain zeal to make oneself feel very important, special or adored. Rest comes only when we are at peace with ourselves and with God's design in our lives.

Its easy to embrace our reward from the recognition we get from peers, loved ones and observers. But the approval of Christ for good deeds done in secret far outweighs any praise from a thankful crowd. For many of us it is good enough to be popular but if we really aim for the sweetest and the best gift of a lifetime, then let us entreat the favour of God with unblemished intention.
