Usages such as ‘Rebirth’ and ‘Newborn’ are not novel or strange concepts in the scriptures. The purpose of the coming of Jesus was, obviously, nothing else. We come across this theme of ‘rebirth’ often in the Holy Bible. Jesus tells Nicodemus, “None can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.” (John 3: 5) this birth is not the biological birth from a mother’s womb but being born of water and spirit.
Water the cleanser
Water is the most potent tool for cleansing and strengthening. Washing in water removes stains and dirt. Jesus says about such a process of cleansing in the spiritual field. His usage is a symbolic one. Just like water cleanses our bodies from dirt, there should also be a cleansing of the soul at the spiritual field. It is not a mere cleansing but strengthening also.
Strengthening of the Spirit
In addition to cleansing, rebirth gives strength or fortification. When Jesus spoke about rebirth he means about strengthening also. This should happen through the anointing of the Spirit.
John the Baptist makes it clear
John the Baptist makes it clear when he says that he baptizes with water whereas Jesus baptizes with water and the Holy Spirit. This is a great acknowledgment of baptism by Jesus.
Jesus explains about his anointing
His anointing takes place through the Holy Spirit. It is not the physical birth intended here. Being born from flesh is the physical birth. This is where Nicodemus asks Jesus, “Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?” (John 3: 4) Jesus then corrects him. “No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.” (John 3:6) This clears the doubts of those who insist about physical rebirth. This is based on the search of the kingdom of God which Jesus asked us to pray for.
Testimony of St. Paul
This idea is further explained by St. Paul in his letter to the Romans. Our call is to be one with Jesus in life, die in him and enter into the glory of the Father. We pray for that kingdom, we care for it and we always endeavor for it. He further confirms it that it was achieved through the resurrection of Jesus. (Gal. 6: 15)
We need to be 'reborn'
We can become true Christians through pure life and the anointing of the Word. This means that to be the followers of Christ is wearing the new man of purity and righteousness. (Eph. 4: 24)
Let us remember that Jesus gives us ‘rebirth’ through the truth of his Word (James 1: 18) and following his footsteps, we can reach the kingdom which he has promised us. (John 3: 5)
