Daddy can I sit on your lap

and hear those stories

of the garden and the apple

with the worm in it?

Of your son – my brother and father

and his tree?

And of the body in the cave

that he opens by open-sesame?



Daddy you lied when you said

it’d be easy to be like him

– endure and be patient and

love everything

and I did Daddy.

I loved my sweet and you took it away

– it was bad for my teeth you said.

I wanted my toys but you kept them

and gave me books of words

I do not understand.



I cannot understand ‘cos

they hurt me so daddy.

Why does your love

and protection hurt me so.



Daddy how can I ever be like him

who never complained

and never cried

but daddy sitting here

with you

you seem to cry my tears for me

and feel my pain

and I hope daddy

that one day

I will learn to be that

lion by being that lamb.
