“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” - John 1:1

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.“ - John 1:14

Ever wonder why Jesus is referred to as the Word? I used to just think, “Well it was just an interesting and tricky way to refer to Him.” without giving it much more thought.

Here is something men would relate to: if we were blessed to have a son we would like to have one that reflected who we are as men. I mean, really guys, would you like to have a son you could brag about, one that would make your chest puff out when he did something that was so much like you? How about a son that was the very “expression” of who you are? Would you beam with pride over that?

If a man ever tells you that it does not matter if he never has a son named after him find that man suspicious.

Words are expressions of ideas, thoughts, beliefs and convictions. Those who like to write love words obviously because they can express who we are.

Maybe we can recall the full name of Jesus when we talk about Him as the Word.

He was “the Word of God”. Think about that. God was saying, “He is everything that is Me: My breath, My mind and heart.

Jesus reflected that very concept. Every time He talked He was talking about the Father, heaven and the kingdom. In things like fish, seeds and cattle He saw an opportunity to talk about something that God would have talked about. He was like a walking Bible. So it really should not be so surprising that we call that book and Him the same thing: the Word of God. He was even so audacious to say that when one read the Old Testament that one was essentially seeing Jesus Himself (John 5:39).

Here is the real clincher: who can know the mind and heart of God so well that He could be called “the Word of God”? Man is so non-spiritual (Romans 3:11) that it takes the Spirit of God to make a man be a prophet to even become a mouth piece for God. Even so no prophet was ever called “the Word”.

Only God could be the Word of God. That is the rub for us frail beings. Even God had to say about Jesus, “This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17; Luke 3:22) Such a thing has never been said about any other person in the world.

In fact, that sounds so much like a proud Father, does it not? It may be for that reason that Jesus also audaciously declared that He was to judge all things at the end of time in His Father's place (John 5:22), because He is the very expression of the Father's will. Only God can do that.

So think about this: when we think or read about Jesus being seated at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19), we are seeing that God is beside Himself. Being God Jesus can ask His will of the Father, which would be met with an affirmative answer, because He is the Word, the expression of the Father's will (2 Corinthians 1:20).

Jesus, as God, is the Word of God.
