One of the hardest things we as Christians will ever do is come to the realization of what we really are—sinners in need of a Savior. When we open our eyes and grasp the fact that we can do nothing to win God’s love, we are facing the inevitable truth: that we cannot find salvation on our own. Nothing we can do or say or think will ever be good enough to gain our entrance into heaven. It is never easy to realize this, especially when our pride and human nature threaten to get in the way. But it is the Biblical truth, even though it can be a tough pill to swallow when we’re first faced with it.

God didn’t send His Son because we deserved it. Far from it! In truth, we don’t deserve it even one iota. Jesus didn’t have to die for us, after all. Certainly God could have chosen an easier way, right? No! In the Old Testament times, over and over again we find that the priests had to sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins. Since Jesus is the Perfect Sacrifice, the Perfect Lamb of God, there is now no more need for repeated sacrifices. Hebrews states that “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” Therefore, there was no other way than to have Jesus die a cruel, horrible death on a cross for our forgiveness. This entire truth can be summed up in Paul’s words in Ephesians 2: 8-9: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” Can anything else hit home as entirely as these verses do?

God’s love is limitless and free. All we have to do is realize that we are sinners, that we can do nothing by ourselves worthy of that love, and accept the sacrifice He made, the forgiveness He gives, and the freedom that He offers. Then, and only then, can we fall into the Savior’s welcoming arms, where we will stay for all eternity.
