Short Stories
Now
war rose
in Heaven,
Michael and
his angels
fighting
against
the dragon.
[Revelation 12:7]

{Author's note:
Angels do not bear
physical hurt, like
humans. All of their
injuries are spiritual,
but they still need
rest and healing.}

(KNOCK! KNOCK!)
"Can we come IN,
LORD?"
[GENTLE NOD.]
"YES.
COME."
(The Big, Huge,
Gold-Throne-Room-Door
opens. Two angels come
in, bearing a fellow-angel
on their broad shoulders.
The fellow-angel, whose
name is Nathaniel,
is rather tall and heavy
(stout) with huge wings;
one wing is tattered and torn;
the other is hanging limp
from his muscular back.
Nathaniel's eyes are closed,
and he is breathing heavily.
The two angels shouldering
Nathaniel are Briggund
and Sylvestor. Sylvestor
has eternally rumpled,
messy brown hair,
two eternally eskew,
big dirty-white wings,
and a really loud voice.
He also has a knack for
losing things when he's
on Angelic-Assignments.)
"NATHANIEL SURE
took a BEATIN',
LORD! THAT
ONE DEMON
WAS A REAL
DOOZIE! WE
THINK HIS NAME
WAS DARTH!
DARTH-DEMON!"
[GENTLY NOD.]
[GENTLE SIGH.]
"Yes,
My Sylvestor.
Bring him over
to Us."
[GRUFF FATHERLY
VOICE.]
"SYLVESTOR!
Where is your SWORD?"
(Sylvestor, helping
Briggund drag the
semi-conscious Nathaniel
over to the purple
velvet cushions
set on the Gold Floor
before the Two Thrones,
merely squints:
looking up
at the Heavenly
Father.)
"HUH?
Huh...
FATHER?"
[GRUFF VOICE.]
"YOUR SWORD?
WHERE IS IT?"
"Eh......."
(Sylvestor stops
helping Briggund
drag Nathaniel
for one moment,
to look down first
at his left side,
and then at his right.)
"Uh, oh."
(Briggund looks
down, too.)
"What did 'ya
DO with it,
SYLVESTOR?"
(Sylvestor, grunting
under the weight
of Nathaniel, merely
shrugs.)
"I DUNNO!
Where.....IS it?"
[FATHER AND SON
GLANCE AT ONE
ANOTHER. THE SON
GENTLY SIGHS. HE
SHAKES HIS HEAD,
GENTLY.]
"Just bring Nathaniel
over here. We will
see about that
later,
My children."
(Sylvestor and Briggund
give each other an
anxious look, and then nod.
They finish dragging
poor Nathaniel
over to the velvet cushions;
the three of
them immediately kneel:
their angelic faces down
on the Golden Tiled Floor.
Sylvestor moves his
head, just a bit, to
open one squinting eye.)
"LORD?"
[GENTLE REBUKE.]
"Did I ask you
to speak,
My Sylvestor?"
(Sylvestor mumbles:
his face is against the
Gold Tiles.)
"Uh, uh!
But........!"
[GRUFF VOICE.]
"SYLVESTOR!
WE WILL TELL
YOU WHEN TO
SPEAK!"
[GRUFF SIGH.]
"Now......BRIGGUND!
TELL US, WHAT
HAPPENED!"
(A mumble can be
heard, from the
Gold Tile Floor.)
[GRUFF VOICE.]
"What was THAT?"
(Briggund, still
breathing heavily
from having to help
carry the rather stout
Nathaniel, looks up.)
"Sylvestor.....said,
Father...
'But they
already KNOW!'"
[GENTLE SIGH.]
"Go on,
Briggund."
(Briggund, rises up:
bringing his long, plain
face up from the purple
velvet cushions.)
"WELL.......it was
REALLY touch and....
GO, for a while,
My LORD! IT WAS
JUST THE THREE OF
US AGAINST SIX OF
SATAN'S DEMONS!
THOSE GUYS WERE
MAJOR-LEAGUE-NASTY!"
(A mumble can be heard
from one of the purple
cushions.)
(Briggund looks over
to Sylvestor who still
has his face to the
floor.)
"Oh, YEAH! THAT'S
RIGHT! THERE WERE
SEVEN! I FORGOT!"
[GENTLE VOICE.]
"And,
where were you,
My children?"
(Briggund stares into
space, for a minute.
He squints.)
"I DUNNO.......I FORGET!
My GEOGRAPHY ISN'T
THAT GOOD,
LORD!"
(Another mumble
can be heard,
from the purple
velvet cushions.)
(Briggund suddenly
nods, and brightens.)
"Oh, YEAH!
THAT'S RIGHT!
IT WAS OVER IN
THAT ...........
BOTTOM-STATE!
IN THE COUNTRY-TO-THE-WEST!"
(Mumble,
from the velvet cushion.)
(Briggund nods,
furiously.)
"WE THINK IT'S
CALLED 'TECC'HUS'!"
[GENTLE SIGH.]
[GRUFF SIGH.]
[GENTLE VOICE.]
"Now go,
My brave-Briggund.
Take Sylvestor with you,
to go and look for his
sword."
(Briggund nods.
Then, he points down.)
"What about NATHANIEL?
WHAT SHOULD WE
DO WITH HIM?"
[GENTLE VOICE.]
"Nathaniel is going
to stay Here,
with Us,
for awhile:
to rest
and be healed."
(Briggund nods.)
"OKAY! BUT.....
SYLVESTOR CAN'T
REMEMBER WHERE
HIS SWORD...
IS.....
LORD!"
[GRUFF SHAKE
OF THE HEAD.]
[GRUFF FATHERLY
VOICE.]
"GO BACK,
YOU TWO...
FROM WHENCE
YOU CAME!"
(Mumble from the
purple cushion,
on the Gold Floor.)
(Briggund looks over
to Sylvester: nods,
and squints.)
"What's 'WHENCE'
MEAN.....
FATHER?"
[GRUFF VOICE.]
"WHERE,
CHILDREN!
WHERE!
NOW GO!"
(Another mumble
from the purple
velvet cushion.)
(Briggund looks
over again at
Sylvestor,
and nods.)
"CAN SYLVESTOR
GET UP, NOW....
LORD? HIS FACE
IS GETTING SQUOOSHED!"
[GENTLE VOICE.]
[GENTLE SIGH.]
"Yes,
Briggund.
You and
Sylvestor....
may depart,
now."
[GENTLE NOD.]
(Both Sylvestor
and Briggund.....
....sighing noisily......
stand up, rather clumsily,
from the purple velvet
cushions, bow deeply
{Sylvestor tripping
over his own bare-feet},
and after a few moments
of patting poor-Nathaniel
on the back and
whispering a few angelic
words of encouragement,
depart: Sylvestor
tugging on his too-huge
wings which have gone
askew again, and Briggund
scratching and shaking
his big curly head,
still trying to figure
out what happened to
Sylvestor's sword.)
(Suddenly, Sylvestor,
still tugging and
pulling on his wayward-
wings, turns around. He
bumps into Briggund who
is walking shoulder-to-
shoulder with his friend.)
"FATHER?"
[EVEN GRUFFER VOICE.]
"NOW, GO!
GO, SYLVESTOR!
AND, DON'T THE
TWO OF YOU COME
BACK UNTIL YOU
FIND THAT SWORD!
IF ONE OF
OUR HUMAN
CHILDREN....
GETS A
HOLD OF IT, I WILL
PERSONALLY HOLD
THE TWO OF YOU
RESPONSIBLE!"
(Sylvestor's face
falls, in a woe-is-me-
grimace.)
"BUT, WHAT ABOUT
NATHANIEL? HE
WAS THERE, TOO!
HE JUST HAPPENED
TO GET ALL BEATEN
UP....IS ALL!"
[GRUFF SHOUT.]
"GO!
And, don't you
worry about NATHANIEL!
NOW....GO!"
(Sylvestor's face
falls even further.
He grabs his elbow,
as his friend gives
him an angelic-poke
in the arm. Several
mumbles can be heard,
between the
two angelic friends.
Briggund turns, just
as he opens the Big
Huge Throne-Room Door.)
"WE'LL FIND IT,
LORD! WE'LL FIND
IT, FATHER! DON'T
WORRY ABOUT IT!
WE'VE GOT IT
COVERED!"
(The Big Huge Throne-
Room Door closes.)
(More mumbles and
muttering can be heard,
from the other side
of The Door.)
[GENTLE SIGH.]
[GRUFF SIGH.]
[GENTLE VOICE.]
"You know......
where it
is, Father."
[GRUFF MUMBLE.]
"Hm, hm."
[GENTLE CHUCKLE.]
On the floor of
the games department...
of Toys-R-Us.....
on Blanco Road,
in San Antonio."
[GRUFF VOICE.]
"Hm, hm."
[GENTLE SIGH.]
"The battle took
place in the dark
hours of the
morning....
on Black Friday....
just before the
store opened...."
[GRUFF NOD.]
"And...
that little boy
found it. His
mother asked the
store manager how
much it COST..."
[GENTLE NOD.]
"And,
the store manager
said he had no
idea - that he
had never seen it
before and that
there was no
record of it...
in the store's
computer-inventory."
[GRUFF SIGH.]
"Hm, hm.
And,
We both
know where it is
NOW......."
[GENTLE CHUCKLE.]
"...Hanging on
the wall....
over the store
manager's desk."
******************
And
the dragon
and
his angels
fought,
but
they
were
defeated...
and
the great dragon....
Satan,
the deceiver
of the
whole world -
he was
thrown
down.
