The Songs
Psalm 150 – Worship 101
Key Verses: (NIV)

Praise the Lord.
Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him in His mighty heavens.
Praise Him for His acts of power; praise Him in His surpassing greatness.
Praise Him with the sounding of the trumpet; praise Him with harp and lyre.
Praise Him with the tambourine and dancing; praise Him with strings and lute.
Praise Him with the clash of cymbals; praise Him with resounding cymbals.
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord.

Points to Contemplate:

• Are you praising the Lord? In what ways? Are you an occasional worshipper usually finding other things to do instead attending worship services? When you do attend, do you fully participate or sit quietly to the side or rear, hoping not to be noticed? Do you evaluate worship services based on what you personally get out of them? According to the psalmist, what is the purpose of worship? Is the intent to teach and grow you or is it to provide you an opportunity to praise God with all your heart? Does this psalm cause you to reflect on your practice of worship and, if so, are you participating with the fullness of your being as it suggests?
  
  
• When do you worship? Is there a proper time and place for worship? Or should every moment of your life be an act of praise and worship? The psalmist seems to suggest that we should be praising God at all times. If this is the case, how do we achieve it? Are we to walk around saying "Praise God" with each passing moment? Are we to be constantly thinking of His "surpassing greatness" with each breath we take? Or is the manner in which we live our lives, living a life dedicated to being the type of person Jesus is calling us to be, a way to praise God constantly? Are you praising God by the way you live your life?
  
  
• How do you worship? Can anyone tell when you are praising God? Are you celebrating His love for you with loud clashing and resounding cymbals? Or do you occasionally strike a single, quiet tone on a triangle or bell? Do you let loose your praise so the world can hear? Or is your praise only between you and God and not for the rest of the world to hear? Is this what God wants? Or does He want the world to see His love for you shine through you and resonate with excitement?
  

Promise of the Gospel:

This last psalm leaves little doubt as to how we are expected to respond to God's love in our lives. At every moment we are to reflect on His greatness and sing songs of praise. With every breath we are to burst forth praise God. The psalmist also teaches us the purpose of worship and how to worship: We are to Praise God and to do so with song, dance, music, and sound. We are to praise Him so the world can hear. Think of this psalm the next time you are in worship and see if you are worshipping the way God would have you worship Him.
