She was just a young girl when he came into her life
And to this day she doesn't know why she agreed to be his wife
Everyone tried to tell her and she wishes now she'd heard
But she'd given him her heart so she never heard a word

Young hearts are full of many things but one thing they usually miss
Is knowing there's more to love than finding someone you can kiss
You've heard this story many times, there's nothing here that's new
But the heartbreak is so hard when the heart belongs to you

So how do you forgive someone who hasn't got a clue?
And how do you choose to love someone who's chosen to hurt you?
How do you find peace when all you feel is bad?
And how do you let it go when you're happy being mad?

In a world full of heartache, it's easy to understand
Why people are so hateful towards their fellow man
Selfishness is everywhere; God knows I've been guilty too
But forgiveness is so hard when the heart belongs to you

He was only five when his baby brother was born
And from the moment they met, a special bond was formed
Blood brothers from the start, no matter what they saw
School, sports, girls; their bond survived it all

Until their father died and everything suddenly changed
Blood brothers turned on each other over some of daddy's things
Words were said in anger that should not have been said at all
That night the bond was broken and replaced by a giant wall

Family ties are severed every single day
But the whiskey river’ll run dry before the pain goes away
You've heard this story many times, there's nothing here that's new
But the heartbreak is so hard when the heart belongs to you

So how do you let it go when you're right and they're wrong?
And how do you fix it if they refuse to come along?
How do you start again when you've been angry for so long?
And how can you believe when your faith and trust are gone?

In a world full of selfishness it's easy to understand
Why people are so hard hearted toward their fellow man
Bitterness is everywhere; God knows I've been guilty too
But forgiveness is so hard when the heart belongs to you

As much as I hate to admit it, I'm guilty of holding a grudge
I've been hurt so many times it's tempting to just not budge
But no matter what I say, I can't deny this truth
Forgiving someone is a choice and I am living proof

Anger can erase memories; bitterness will harden hearts
If anyone deserved to forget me, it has to be the Son of God
But instead He chose to love me and give me another shot
Love has an eraser too and it's my sin God forgot

How do you forgive someone who hasn't got a clue?
Just remember what God has done so He could forgive you
In a world full of selfishness, it's easy to get sucked in
But we are not alone; we truly have a friend
Who understands our heartbreak and knows the pain we're in
And forgiveness isn't so hard when your heart belongs to him
