Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday November 16, 2010
Reading the scriptures often stirs me to thinking and to action. Thinking without action following is usually not thinking at all, but merely wishful day dreaming. Acting without thinking can be very stupid and sometimes devastating to you, your family and even a nation. In times of great crisis God often raises up one person, a man or a woman whom God sets of fire with courage and insight and others rally around that person and some sort of great victory results. The principle of God looking for the one person of courage is oft repeated, but for today I like Ezekiel 22:30:
And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.
In this verse God is on record of the power of one man who will surrender to God's will and in return God would save the entire nation. Just one man.
Every aspect of the world we live in is constantly on the lookout for the "one" who will somehow turn the tide. In some case he/she will be erudite in others an unwashed savage, but he/she is the "one." To say that organizations and nations make mistakes in who they select is serious understatement. Yet when the "one" walks on the scene the necessary things happen.
When David stepped up to Goliath, the army of Israel, paralyzed by fear was infused with new courage and a great battle was one. A shepherd armed with a sling and five stones certainly does not seem a fit match for a nine foot tall seasoned soldier, but you know the story.
Adam Clarke commented on Ezekiel's verse with this: "I saw that there was a grievous breach made in the moral state and feeling of the people, and I sought for a man that would stand in the gap; that would faithfully exhort, reprove and counsel with all long-suffering and doctrine. But none was to be found!"
David was the "one" for the military, Samuel the "one" for the religious affairs and Deborah the "one" for the judicial affairs. The list is as long as history, the arena of sports in replete the influence of the "one." Eric Liddell was such a "one."
Leslie C. Aguilar wrote:
"Just one person taking action can inspire others to do the same."
You could be the person God is looking for to stand in the gap in your own life, your family, school or who knows. The only question is; are you willing?
One day a student asked Aristotle, "How many are One?" Aristotle stated he would give answer next morning. At morning he said, "In answer to your question "How many are one" in the area of human affairs one can be a very great many." The student was the son of Philipp of Macedon, Alexander. Most add "The Great."
