Poetry
“A friend loveth at all times...”
It sounds so good...so wonderful
But can it be true
Can a friend love at all times?
If you become angry with me
Because of ill-chosen words
Or thoughtless action
Can you still love me, my friend?
And if in silent sorrow you hide your face
Building a wall between us
Choosing the closed door of solitude
Can I still love you, my friend?
If we are overrun by the world
With demands we cannot meet
Questions we cannot answer
Can we love through all this
Can anger, sorrow or busyness
Stop the flow of love...for even a moment
I cannot recall a time since knowing you
When I have not loved you
I cannot imagine a time when I wouldn't
Nor imagine any word or deed that would
Still it for even a moment
But I do remember meeting you at the foot of His cross
And I can still taste our cleansing tears of joy
As two empty hearts were filled by an empty tomb
And two desparate lives were forever
Healed and made whole and holy
And I can imagine a family of the redeemed
Singing before a golden throne
With you and I among them
And I can believe:
That a true friend not only "loveth at all times"
But loveth for all time.
