The Politi-King Game

Neath spacious skies, o'er waves of grain,
From sea to shining sea,
O'er plains, up regal purple peaks,
The great American pastime has begun,
With prophets, sages, candidates,
Prognosticating futures for us all,
We wonder what tomorrow has in store,
Such is The Politi-king Game!

By sight, by sound, on airy waves,
At home, at work, at play,
By post, by phone, by printed page,
Great barrels of pork they promise everyone,
With surveys, forecasts, endless polls,
Concocting from these vials their stock in trade,
Omniscient they seem; soothsayers all,
Such is The Politi-king Game!

To plot the course of destiny,
To move the Ship of State,
By hot air speeches, gridlocked power,
Each aspires to place his hand upon the helm,
A Lincoln, Truman, Kennedy,
Each, in his muses, sees himself to be,
Each knows that he was born unto this hour,
Such is The Politi-king Game!
