“Books” by Cindy Mrva
Please Read: Psalm 119:89-1105Estimated number of books published in modern history: Nearly 130 million
There are books for every genre – fiction, non-fiction, science fiction, mysteries, romance, fantasy, historical, science, psychology, self-help, art - and the list goes on. Walk into any public or private library (or walk into your local bookstore) and you will see row after row of books categorized by almost every subject imaginable.
Books can be fun, interesting, enlightening, informative, contemplative, helpful and resourceful. Now, you have a choice to read an actual physical book or read a book electronically. Books are everywhere…. Friends, family, co-workers all recommend you read the latest book they are reading or have read, telling you, “you’ll love this book” or “this book really made a difference in my life”. Books are written and published every day.
Estimated number of Christian books in print today: approximately 6 million
Just like the world (and I almost gasped when I said “just like the world” - Romans 12:2), Christians have books in every genre as well. Not only are there books in every genre, there are books about how to gain peace, how to pray, how to forgive, how to worship, how to… well I think you get the picture. Just say “how to (and fill in the blank). Books serve a purpose whether inside or outside the Christian community. They are fun, interesting, and the list goes on just like I previously stated. Reading is good; don’t stop – it keeps your mind fresh and stimulated.
My question is, “How many Christians pick up a book instead of going to the Good Book?” How many of us, when reading one of those books on “how to”, actually take the time to look up the scriptures that the author quotes? How many times do we really check out who the author is and what they believe in? Are we like the Bereans that Luke wrote about in Acts 17:11 ?
“Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.”
My encouragement to you (and I am talking to myself as well) is the next time you want something to read or maybe the next time you suggest a book to a fellow brother or sister in Christ – pick up or suggest reading the Bible – The Word of God. The bible has it all and it is all true – it has mystery, romance, murder, intrigue; it’s historical, it is the best self-help book ever published, it is informative, it’s contemplative, it’s interesting, it’s enlightening, it will revive your heart, make your spirit soar and change your world.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105
