Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday October 27, 2010

For years men my age have wondered why we loved old time Western movies. In browsing the Internet, better known as the Gorian Wave, I came across a piece which I mentioned last week about the movie, "High Noon." The writer of the piece one Robert Warshaw clearly stated the number one reason most of us liked the Westerns, the obvious was way over our head. But having been stated it makes sense.

"In Western movies, men have the deeper knowledge and the women are children."

We loved the Old Western's due to their portrayal of truth as we knew it. That the subliminal message changed is clearly traced to the TV show, Gun Smoke and the all wise Miss Kitty. In most episodes when Marshal Dillion or Chester were at the end of their rope, they ran down to the saloon and presto, the all wise Miss Kitty solved the mystery for them. That Miss Kitty was the consummate Matriarch is beyond question. People became so enamored with the motherly Miss Kitty that they even attempted to change the Constitution of the United States of America, calling the bill "The Equal Rights Amendment."

Men, not being as dumb as portrayed while groveling at Miss Kitty's feet, rallied and defeated the bill, but lost the war. This is one reason many women hate Sarah Palin for she resembles Miss Kitty far more than say, Hillary Clinton. Hillary is too matronly while Sarah is, you know, appealing and therefore wise. At least men see this and women hate it. I can still hear Mom hollering at one of my stepfathers for "being in there watching that ole Miss Kitty." Try as he would there was no convincing her he was watching Marshal Dillion. True, certain types of men were more interested in the Marshall than Miss Kitty but in those days such things were kept private, at least in our part of the country.

While maintaining the time honored principle that real cowboys kiss horses and not girls, Gun Smoke was successful in promoting the idea, false I might add, that women are wiser than men. I don't know if our country will recover. As you know the majority of Americans blame President Obama, he blames George W. Bush and he blames "librals" but I think it goes all the way back to Miss Kitty Russell. Time will tell.

I hope you do not take this piece as a tongue in cheek spoof. You know there really are wise women somewhere. Sure. One girl Bible teacher told me that Delilah is the Proverbs 31 woman.

Proverbs 31:10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

I hope by the time this article hits mass readership I will have found a hiding place.
