Larry Lilly's Letter Monday October 25, 2010

On Monday last my title was, "The Beautiful Life Mundane." The idea was that life lived with small regular achievements in the long run turns out better than forgetting the duties of love and waiting for some magic heroic moment.

A girl that I have known since she was a child and in whom the only fault of which I am aware is that she claims a close friendship with my Sister Bertie, and therefore bears watching, Mary Ann, wrote the following:

"Hi Larry,

"I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble." Helen Keller

As always, I look forward to your daily Christian insight as I read your letters. Each day I find many pieces to cause me to rethink things "Again" throughout my day. However today's letter is almost like one of my favorite comfort food dishes. This is my life. Plain and simple, yet truly to live this kind of life is not simple by any means.
It really took me a while to come to understand this concept. For years I thought so much more differently and then when my dear husband passed away I realized an amazing thing. We did everyday life together very well. Going to work every day, raising our children to know and love Jesus, not by preaching, but by example; dealing with what each day brings and knowing that whatever it is you are not alone. Some people may observe that I have had a "mundane" life, but in truth it has been amazing so far. I look forward to what "small tasks" are in store for me in the "morrow! Smiles, Mary Ann"

Thank you Mary Ann, you have hit the nail on the head as to why we should pray for those in some kind of authority over us, so that we may lead the Christian life without harassment. But if we do not have the right kind of leaders, we are to live the Beautiful Life Mundane anyway. Paul makes this plain in 1Timothy 2:2:

For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

In light of the emphasis in today's world on the Christian "Celebrity" as a role model I find it beyond interesting that God puts a premium on a Godly person's home life, the beautiful but often seeming mundane.
