Larry Lilly's Letter Monday October 18, 2010

Wes Gates, longtime friend and currently interim pastor at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church sent a site to me featuring quotes from "Wise Women." While skeptical, I did find this from Helen Keller:

"I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble."

I know that I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer and the Great Blonde wonders if I am even in the drawer, but I do note the wisdom in this from an alleged wise woman.

Most people have, even suffer from "Hero Syndrome" meaning they just hang out during their life span waiting for the moment when suddenly, out of nowhere "the moment for which they were born" leaps upon them. Many even have their "Aw, shucks anybody would have done the same" speech memorized.

That these dreamy men and women live a life of daily disappointment is a matter of record. The reason we look up to those who intervene in some event in a heroic manner is simple, the opportunity to do so seldom if ever presents itself. And the fact that most are not prepared mentally or physically for such opportunities is witnessed by the fact that when an event that requires courageous heroic intervention is suddenly presented the want to be hero has a fear induced sudden call of nature and is thus eliminated from the action.

Truth be known God has so laid out life that the life that counts is one that is daily lived for God's glory and finds inner satisfaction in the knowledge that caring for a loved one who is incapacitated may be, probably is, far more important as a testimony to character than say intervening in a bank robbery or mugging.

The year in and year out plugging away at what is called "the mundane" is the fiber of a great person and the lasting culture. Leaving the little things undone while you wait for the moment of greatness, demonstrates a failure to understand the realities of life.

The life well lived in the power of Christ consists of daily walking with Him and will at the end reveal a mountain of small tasks accomplished with a sense of pride in that our duty of love has been fulfilled. The accumulated mountain of small tasks done faithfully will make more of a difference than will a sudden momentary rise to fame in the long run in more lives, thus enshrining your life in the hearts of those whom you served, to say nothing of obeying the Lord Jesus.

"I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble."
