BIGFOOT AND BIBLE BOY




Late one Wednesday evening, returning home on the outskirts of Ada, OK, young Zebadiah Taylor and his father were driving through a heavily wooded area. Suddenly, something came onto the road about fifty yards ahead. Apparently stunned by the headlights, the creature just stood there. They came to a stop about twenty feet from it –close enough for a good look for the short time it was there. It was like nothing they’d ever seen before. It stood erect, slouching slightly, was covered with long reddish brown hair, and was very tall. Zeb’s dad estimated it to be seven to eight feet tall and weighing 350 to 400 pounds.
After the creature ran into the woods, they continued cautiously and quietly homeward. About a mile from home Zeb finally spoke up, “What was that thing?” he asked .His father said, “I don’t know. Maybe it was a “Bigfoot.”” Zeb looked at him in wonder, having never heard of Bigfoot before, and asked him, “What’s that?” His dad answered, “No one knows for sure and most people don’t believe they exist.” Zeb said, “I believe they do because I just saw one.” Hid dad chuckled as they pulled into their driveway. He told Zeb, “Maybe you shouldn’t talk about it or people might think you’re crazy or telling stories.” Zeb agreed and they kept it between the two of them.
Over the next three years, they recalled that night time and again. His father knew he was intrigued by the Bigfoot phenomenon because when there was anything about it on T.V., Zeb watched intently. Maybe that’s why his father’s last birthday present to him meant so much.
Six months before Zeb’s eleventh birthday, his dad was diagnosed with cancer. He died four months later. Zebadiah was devastated and became quite reclusive. However, with the help of his mom and grandparents, his faith, and the passage of time he began to heal and get on with his life.
Sometime before his father passed away, he had bought Zeb a birthday present, which was a book titled Bigfoot: Man, Monster, or Myth. Zeb was excited until he realized it was the last present his dad would ever give him, and he couldn’t thank him for it. So, he took it to his room, lay on his bed, held the book to his chest, and cried himself to sleep.
The next morning Zeb read the book through teary eyes. The accounts it gave boosted his curiosity about Bigfoot and what it could be. He hoped to someday find out.
For the next seven years, except for accepting Christ as his savior when he was twelve, Zeb’s life was relatively uneventful. He had continued attending church with his mom and grandparents. He knew his dad would have wanted that. He also studied the Bible –reading it through nearly three times. He carried it to school, which before long earned him the nickname
“Bible Boy.” During this time, Zeb’s curiosity about Bigfoot took back seat to his faith but, it never left.
One day while studying, Genesis 6:4 “There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward…” caught his eye. He pondered that verse and began to wonder if there could still be giants on earth. He didn’t recall the Bible saying that all giants had been killed or died. Then he wondered if Bigfoot could be descended from Biblical giants…or maybe Esau. After all, Esau was covered with hair. He wasn’t sure how he could gather proof to support his hunches. He couldn’t afford the motion sensor cameras or other high-tech devices he’d seen Bigfoot hunters use on television. So, he came up with a different approach –communication.
He asked some Bible scholar historians at his church what languages were spoken in Old Testament times. Some said Greek. Some said Hebrew. So, for a few years, he studied and learned both. Then he made wooden boxes, wrote questions in each language, put them inside, and took them to the place where he and his father had seen the creature years earlier. He put a pencil in each box in case there was a response. He left them in secluded areas, planning to check them the next day.
The next day he hurried to check the boxes. With questions like “Who are you?” “Where are you from?” and “What do you want?” he was anxious to see the answers –if there were any. Coming to where he’d left them, he noticed they had been moved. The first two were only moved a few feet. Smaller animals could have done that. The third box, however, was ten feet high in a tree. Climbing to get it, Zeb noticed some long, dark hair hanging from a branch. He
grabbed it, put it in a bag, got the box and opened all three. Finding everything intact and no questions answered he again left the boxes, all near where he had found the third one.
The next day he returned to find the first two boxes missing. The third box was again in the tree he’d retrieved it from before. Upon opening it, he found the question page had been answered in Hebrew. “Who are you?” was answered REPHAIM. After “Where are you from?” was written DEEP FOREST. As for what he wanted, there was one word, written very dark –ALONE.
Just then, a tree crashed behind him. He turned to see a large hairy creature staring sadly back at him from across the stream. Then it vanished into the foliage. Zeb sat there, stunned. Then he remembered something from the Bible –“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” He thought this could apply to Bigfoot too. Besides, his curiosity had been satisfied. He knew what he had to do –respect the creature’s wishes. He left the box of answered questions behind as he left the forest. He had what he’d come for –the truth.
