Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday October 5, 2010

Prior to conversion I had no time for church and even less for what I called, "Snooty Christians." My definition of "Snooty Christians" was broad enough to include every last one. Over the last 48 years I have changed this idea only slightly.

As an antidote to "Snooty Saints" I like this account of an "Unsnooty Christian."

As the historical account goes, at a large, very important, in their own mind, church in Washington, DC the time for presenting applicants for membership in said staid church came and the procession began. It was September 28, 1930.

As people came forward they were introduced to the congregation of fellow Baptists. The first one forward was Chinese laundryman, Ah Sing. He stood alone. A dozen or so others came and stood on the opposite side of the pulpit. Finally a very dignified looking man came forward. This man had served two terms as Governor of New York, ran for President in 1921 and had been appointed two times to the Supreme Court of The United States, and was then serving as Chief Justice of said court having been appointed by President Herbert Hoover. Our most dignified personage, to the astonishment of all, took his place alongside, Ah Sing.

As Chief Justice The Honorable Charles Evans Hughes, stood by the side of laundryman Ah Sing, the pastor said:

"I do not want this congregation to miss the remarkable illustration of the fact that at the cross of Jesus Christ the ground is level."

So much for "Snooty Saints."

A coming accounting day will be titled, "Comeuppance Day For Snooty Saints."

Jesus Christ always seeks the company of those who love Him but for one reason or another are looked down on by the "Snooty Sanctified Ones." Often well meaning people who themselves were once at the bottom of the social order forget whence they came and often outdo, the long nosed holier than thou group.

Jesus has stood by me in the raging storms of my life; therefore I welcome the chance to stand by you as we meet at the cross. The ground is level you know.
