Here I was, at home, doing my household chores, pretending to feel happy, lamenting that I wasn't somewhere in some South Sea Island, being spoilt by the sunshine,a hunky waiter proffering me martinis, even though I hadn't quite hit the Happy Hour.
Then it happened! I saw a flash of light, like an arc from the outer side of my right eye!I dropped my duster,blinked a few times, but no! It would not leave me alone. I ignored it, picked up where I left off and again, flash, flash flash.I closed my eyes and it was still there.
Because I am in that state of mind, whereby, I know I am no longer suffering the plight of puberty,ie; I'm getting old,I thought;'Vera, you are imaging this, you silly goose!

I continued with my work, even though the flashes were getting quicker and brighter- this went on for 2 days.

My brother called. I was in two minds whether to tell him,

a}because I thought I was going 'mental'
b) because he has a wicked sense of humour!

So I told him. His response? 'When did the UFO land?"

Then a few days later, I'm seeing spots before my eyes. If I focus on them,my vision becomes blurred.If I did not focus on them, my vision was still blurred!

I got onto the Internet and read about Retina detachment. I froze!

I made my husband make an appointment for me at our local Opticians. 3 days later, I venture into his office-I swear I was covered in sweat! So when he went to shake my hand to introduce himself,as Richard, I had to wipe my palm on my trouser leg to make sure he held a dry hand.

Then we went through all the questions;health of my family, etc. The he asked if I ever had an eye injury.I sat back and my mind went back to my classroom over 40 years ago. My friend, Anne, (who sat to the left of me),had a steel comb in her hand, one of those combs with a 'tail' in other words, the end of the comb looked like a knitting needle. As she was combing her hair, I turned to speak to her, and the tail of the comb lodged into my eyeball.My eyeball bled and our teacher told us to go to the local hospital,Anne and I were thrilled to get out of our lessons!

I got the all clear from the hospital, saying my eyeball would have a bruise, but no need for concern.
Fast forward to last week.

Richard took a photo of both my eyes.My right eye looked normal-my left eye had a scar, (which would account for the comb episode}-but what clearly disturbed us was when Richard pointed out the distance between the scar and the optic nerve, it was centimetres!
He went on to explain, had the comb hit the blood vessels surrounding the optic nerve, I would have been blinded!
Thankfully, I do not have retina detachment, my eyesight is very good, a little shortsighted, but then again, who's perfect? I ordered new reading glasses, plus sunglasses and I thank Anne for not blinding me with her comb, over 40 years ago. Bless her!
