Encouragement
Creation of ‘lights’ was the first work of God. He saw the light was good. He separated light from darkness. But the Power of Darkness, the symbol of evil, influenced man and carried him away from God. Jesus came as the light of the world and redeemed man. He brought him back to light. He shared with them the light and gave them the commandment to be the light of the world and cast away darkness.
Symbolic lights Old Testament
In the Old Testament, God is seen as the symbol of light. “God called to him out of the bush, ‘Moses, Moses!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.” (Exodus 3:4). Again we see God leading the Israelites in the form of light. “The Lord went in front of them in a pillar of cloud by day, to lead them along the way, and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light so that they might travel by day and night” (Exodus 13:21). On the top of Mount Sinai, God descended in fire. “Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God. They took their stand at the foot of the mountain. Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke, because the Lord had descended upon it in fire” (Exodus 19:18).
Jesus comes as the ‘Light of the world’
Jesus came as the light of the world. “In him was life and life was the light of man” (John1:4), “the true light which lights every man that comes into the world” (John 1:9). It is true in the physical as well as the spiritual sense. Physically we live in Jesus and have our being. Man lived in darkness and Jesus came to save him from darkness and lead him in light. Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world; the one who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have light and life.”(John 8:12)
We are called to be the lights
Each one of us is called to receive light from Jesus, the Light of the world, and free ourselves from the areas of darkness in us, and become beacons of light to the world. “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lamp stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give gory to your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16) the words of Jesus are quite clear instructing us how to be the lights of the world. When we receive Jesus, the light, we become the children of God.
Hopefully stand and shine
We have been assured of all powers to overcome the treacheries of evil. When Jesus is with us power of evil can not have any authority over us. As Psalm 34 says, “They who look to him are radiant with joy, their faces never clouded with shame,” let us look at our Lord, who defeated the powers of darkness. “The night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.”(Romans 13:12) Let us stand up and shine!
