The Baptism of the Holy Spirit, Is it Real?
By Rick L. King
I met Jesus when I was age 28. I am now 61. My conversion was quite remarkable, as I was not looking for the Lord at all. My life had fallen apart, as my wife and I split up, my job was gone, and I had little money. Everything that I had considered to be my life was gone. I was a mess and became suicidal. Friends that I had had tried to tell me about Jesus but I was so proud I cursed at them thinking I knew it all. But, when the time came, they were the ones that led me to know Jesus. I had planned my suicide and was just about ready to go. I found myself going to their house. They told me that if I would just say this simple prayer that all would change. I would get a new life in Jesus. I can’t say that I really believed what they had said, but I did as they asked. Immediately it was like someone lifted 2000 pounds from my shoulder. I felt free inside and at peace for the first time in my life. I went outside and looked around and saw things that I had never noticed before. The trees and the sky were a different color. They were so beautiful. I was seeing them through God’s eyes now. It was an awesome time in my life, as my life now finally was just beginning to take on purpose.
Though as awesome a conversion that I experienced, this is not what this article is really about. I received power from on high a few years later. I was baptized in the Holy Spirit. Do you think I believed in any of it? No way. This was too far about and rather unbelievable to me. But, God being God, had other plans for me.
I had gone to a Women’s Aglow meeting with the lady that led me to the Lord. I think that I was the only man there. During worship I had raised my hands to the Lord in worship and all the sudden my knees seemed to become like rubber. I just couldn’t stand up. I was holding on to the back of a chair rather than fall down. I asked a lady what was wrong and what should I do. She told me to go up front and be prayed for. Me, being so new in the Lord and not having a clue just did as I was told, as I knew something was going on in me. I went up front and the lady that was praying for people asked me if I knew some scriptures. She asked me about many. I had told her, heck no, I don’t know anything. I am just a new kid on the block. She then said well, let me just pray for you. She touched my forehead with one finger. That is the last thing that I remembered. I woke up twenty minutes later under a chair. I tried to get up and it was like I was drunk. I could hardly walk. I was determined to walk I guess and staggered all over the building. I found myself up near the front again and the lady who prayed for me asked me if I wanted some more. I said no way! I can’t handle what I have already. Even though I felt so drunk, I felt strength, a freedom and a peace inside that I never would have known could exist. I stayed drunk like this for about 4 hours. I had gone home and was lying on the couch and just worshiping the Lord. All the sudden I was speaking in another language. No one had told me about this, so I was needless to say concerned. I found that I was speaking in tongues. It was such a glorious experience that I will never forget. I have not stopped speaking in tougues since. I have since realized the value of tongues and the power of God that comes as a result. It takes me from my natural carnal man into the spirit realm. I am able to hear what the Holy Spirit wants to say to me. He shows me how to pray. He gives me guidance. He fills me with His power so I don’t have to rely on my own (which by the way put me on course to die through suicide, as I had no clue of really how to run my life).
Prior to that experience I had gone to meetings where people were prayed for and down they went. I thought it was so silly and said I don’t believe this to be of God at all. Well, interestingly enough it seems the Lord decided to show me anyway. I found that it is truly of the Lord and the second best thing that ever happened to me. I have learned to use a scripture as the basis of my walk with the Lord. It is Zechariah 4:6. It says…Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit saith the Lord…
I have learned over the years it has nothing to do with me. It is only about Him. I gave my life to Him to rule and reign and be Lord. He decides what He wants for me, as it is His life in and through me. He is taking me on a journey that I never would have dreamed could be. Sure it has its ups and downs, but experiencing the power of God and Him in control is the greatest thing that I could have ever gotten.
I am writing this in hopes that someone will read that really needs to know His power. It is very real. It is available to all who ask. Yes, it blows our natural thinking, but scripture does say that the natural man receives not the things of God. His ways and thoughts are higher than ours are. If you really are tired of the dead religion that is so prominent today in the majority of churches, I would encourage you to ask the Lord to Baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. You will find that this is one of the wisest decisions that you ever made. You will taste of the Lord in ways that you never could have imagined. Seek and ye shall find.…
There are so many people that have experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Granted, not everyone experiences the same thing or maybe not as dramatic. Why he decided to give me this blessing like he did, only he knows. But I do know that we must surrender our lives totally to Him if He is to be our Lord. He will empower us to walk in ways and places far above anything that we can come up with. It is a glorious gift from God, that I am so thankful that even though I didn’t want or believe for it, He gave me grace and gave me so much anyway. May the Lord bless and guide you on your search for more of Him.
Ac 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Lu 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
