"Jesus answered and said to him, 'Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.'" - John 3:3

We live in a world of people who claim to be spiritual. If so, why does it seem that the spirituality of the rest of the world is contrary to Christian spirituality? How is it that the two types of spirituality seem opposed? Just what is True Spirituality?

I believe the answer lies in the statement Jesus made to Nicodemus all those many years ago.

True Spirituality is Not Natural: 1 Corinthians teaches that natural man is incapable of being spiritual. It requires the facilitation of the Holy Spirit (Ch. 2, vss. 13-15). Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would be our spiritual Guide (John 16:13-15). Real spiritual truth is unobtainable naturally. The Spirit of God must condescend to those who desire Him that they must understand spiritual matters.

True Spirituality Requires Spiritual Initiation: As stated in John 3:3 in order for one to "see" or perceive what is otherwise unobtainable one must be born spiritually. The Source provides the means to this end and can only be done by God's will, not our own (John 1:12).

True Spirituality Involves Divine Perspective: By the power of the Holy Spirit, using what God has revealed scripturally, we are then able to perceive what God has intended, what Jesus called "the Kingdom of God". When we see the kingdom principles and ideals we see the Lord's end in all He means. The path is then laid out. All we need do is to let Him take us there.

We see what the Lord requires. We are truly Spiritual when it is the Spirit of God behind it all with His book the Bible, using Jesus as the Model. This is true Spirituality.

True spirituality is not emotionalism. It is seeing things truly. It is having an understanding about life and what the Lord has given us being His stewards and the pinnacle of what He has created (Proverbs 1:2-4; 2 Peter 1:2-4).
