How could have Jesus explained the complicated spiritual ideas to uneducated audiences that he faced in Palestine? He used many simple examples to reach their hearts and brains. Seed seems to be his favorite one to explain the Kingdom of God and his Gospel message.

Jesus Christ, through his preaching ministry of just a few months, tried to reach the hearts and brains of his Palestine audiences with simple examples. Through his examples the simple souls of Galilee, Samaria and Judea could intuit into deep spiritual truths. His examples with seeds to speak about spiritual things, especially of faith and the Kingdom of God are really excellent. Seed seems to be his favorite one.

Parables of Seed

In many occasions Jesus speaks about seeds. The parable about seeds in the ‘Parable of the sower’ ‘the parable of the weeds’ and the parable about the mustard seed (Matthew 13) bring out his deep message in simple words and example.

The Parable of the Sower

Jesus brings before us four places where the seeds were sown. Seeds were thrown along the path, on the rocky ground, among thorns and on good ground. How beautifully this example represents the hearts where the Word of God was sown. An unworthy heart, a stubborn heart, a weak heart easily distracted by other elements and a good heart which is ready to embrace the word and where the word goes deep and yields thirty, sixty and hundred-fold harvest.

This parable is also an explanation of the commandment to love God with one’s heart, soul and strength. The word of God should go deep enough to reach the moisture and light. It should be protected from birds of distractions. Love should withstand persecutions.

The Parable of Weeds

Another parable of Jesus explains the story of a farmer who sows good seed and when it sprouts weeds are found to be growing among them. He explains how the power of evil acts in the world. He gives a solution that the final harvest day will separate the good and bad. Through this Jesus explained why God allows bad people to exist and flourish. It shows how God is always patient.

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

The parable of the mustard seed speaks of the dawn of the Kingdom of God that begins in small ways and only gradually comes into full maturity. This means that slowly and steadily by our good deeds and prayers we build up the kingdom of God.
Faith is the gift of God given through the word. Let us seek the word of God. May the seeds of God fall in our hearts and yield fruits abundantly!
