Many struggle to make ends meet. We know you can’t take it with you, but still feel driven to work harder, acquire more, and save for that rainy day. The years quickly pass; then most find it necessary to downsize. Elderly sell or donate household items, keeping only a few heirlooms. Looking back at where they have been and knowing what waits ahead can be depressing. Some wonder, is that all there is?


I saw the despondency in my Dad. He worked two jobs to provide for his large family. He and Mom moved from their big four-bedroom house, following his retirement. It was a challenge to step down to a two-bedroom mobile home. Changes continued; their health declined necessitating a move into a tiny two-bedroom government assisted housing apartment. Mom died, and he moved into an assisted living facility. At the time of his death, he shared a room in a nursing home. Is that all there is?


“Nothing makes sense! Everything is nonsense. I have seen it all – nothing makes sense! What is there to show for all of our hard work here on this earth? People come, and people go, but still the world never changes (Ecclesiastes 1:2-4 CEV). Solomon the writer grumbled and took a negative view. After consideration he realized, that is not all there is to life. “Everything you were taught can be put into a few words: Respect and obey God! This is what life is all about (Ecclesiastes 12:13 CEV).”
