The Apostle Peter is an amazing story in the Gospels. Peter’s story is a story of how even when we walk with Jesus Everyday we still can fail him. Ultimately Peter’s story is how the power of God can redeem us. Peter had seen Jesus do so much and when it came down to it he denied him, he denied him, he denied him. In the book of Matthew we can follow Peters Journey with Jesus.
Matt. 4:18-20 Jesus calls Peter and Peter follows him.
Matt. 8:15 Jesus heals Peter’s mother-in-law.
Matt. 8:23-28 Jesus calms the storm on the sea.
Matt.10:1 the disciples are given authority by Jesus to cast out demons and to heal people.
Matt 14:19 the feeding of the 5,000
Matt 14:29-32 Peter walking on water. Peter is the only person who ever walked on water that we know about. The Israelites twice had the water parted so they could walk through on dry land, but never walk on the water.
Matt 15:36 feeding of the 4,000
Matt 16:15-17 Jesus asks the disciples who they think he is and Peter says “you are the Christ, the son of the living God”
Matt 17:1-8 the transfiguration were Peter, James and John see Christ in his glory and hear God speak from heaven about Jesus.
Plus Peter had been with Jesus for three years of teaching and healing and all the other miracles that Jesus performed.
He had seen blind men see again or some for the first time. He had seen the lame walk again. He had seen the dead brought back to life. Peter himself had even done some of those healings and miracles himself in Jesus name.
Then came what I believe was the darkest point in Peter’s life. This came even after Jesus told Peter that it would happen and Peter swore that it would not.
Matthew 26:69-75 tells the story of Peter Denying Christ to a servant girl, denying Christ to another servant girl and then denying Christ to what the ESV calls bystanders. In Luke 22:61 it adds that right after the rooster crowed Jesus turned and looked at him. He went out and wept bitterly. After all he had seen and done Peter had just denied knowing the one he had called the Christ, the son of the Living God.
While Peter was hiding some where Jesus was saving him from that very denial.
John 21:15-17 Three denials three reaffirmations of his love for Christ. Three times Peter had denied Christ now after Christ’s resurrection they are sitting on a shore and three times Jesus asks Peter if he loves him. Jesus was giving Peter the chance to repent of those three denials.
Jesus paid the price so that Peter could live, Jesus paid the price so that we could live.

Peter was forgiven by Jesus because Jesus paid the price on the cross. We can know that same forgiveness. We have all denied Christ and now Christ is asking “Do you love me?”
What will your answer be?
Peter went on to become one of the early leaders of the church and his preaching led thousands to Christ. That is the power of God.
