Larry Lilly's Letter Monday September 13, 2010

Here is my statement for today:

"After many years of thinking about it I finally hiked the entire width of the Appalachian Trail this year."

I don't remember a time when I did not love mountains. And the mountains crossed on the Trail are stupendous. But then I love mountains. I recall the first time I flew my plane across Kansas in the early morning and with the sun at my back at 20,000 feet the Rocky Mountains rose before me in all their noted splendor, I actually wept at the site.

Based on my research you have probably re-read my statement for today. One word in the statement should tell you one of two things about my Appalachian Trail trip. I used the wrong word, "width" or I am pulling your leg. While I do love mountains, I was pulling your leg, for people in wheel chairs can, in a few minutes at most "hike the Width" of the famous trail.

Humans are strange creatures and we love to save time and because of this we often, inadvertently, to be sure, supply a word or thought in order for what we are hearing or reading to make the most sense. This is one reason why Credit Card Companies and other swindlers make effective use of the small print in contracts. A judge will tell you that every word matters in a contract. Surely you see the humor in Congress forcing CCC's to make contracts more clear.

It pays to read and re-read contracts, statements by known wags (yours truly) and to check supposed biblical teachers by finding out more about the law and especially the Bible. I am hearing more and more preachers using the term "You'll have to trust me on this" or similar words. If you will not prayerfully check out teaching with the scriptures, you may be in for a Kool-Aid Party. (Actually, Flavor Aid).

According to Jesus the scriptures are eternal life giving because they teach the searcher about Him. Notice John 5:39:

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

The early church at Berea is commended for trusting the scriptures, Acts 17:11: These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
