DO CAMPING AND CONFERENCES BRING ABOUT REAL CHANGE?

There is certainly nothing wrong with weekend conferences, retreats, and Christian camping experiences, but there is a major danger. It is so easy to get all excited and emotionally charged during the experience and for a short time afterward, but after you come down off the literal mountain or the weekend "high" of a retreat or conference, and get back to the normal routine of life, is your life any different? How is your life different a week later? A month later? A year later? Has there really been a lasting change?

Change requires day-by-day effort until a new habit, mind-set, or behavior becomes engrained in a person's character. Experts tell us that it takes 20 consecutive days to change a habit or behavior, not a weekend, or even in a week at camp.

Change is much more likely to occur because of a new way of thinking, AND by giving continual attention and effort to a new behavior, more than as a result of an emotional high.

Much good can come from weekend retreats and camping experiences, but unless you are determined to put into practice what you have learned, for as long as necessary, until lasting change ensues, do not expect any miracles.
