Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday August 10, 2010

I am one of those forlorn souls who readily admit to fighting "bouts of despair" which I regularly lose. I know, I know, you want to read of the Silver Bullet that guarantees absolute victory and never a battle be again waged. I hope you find it in the practical realm. I have studied this magic missile in the realm of theory and love it, but when I lay my head down I often feel as though I attempting to sail the Pacific in a barrel.

As I read the Facebook page which is regularly filled with blaspheme and high theology, I came across this old line offered on the subject. It should be a Silver Bullet, but for me it does help some.

Chemical imbalances can bring on feelings of despair as can disastrous circumstances, a sense of lack, the "something is missing in my life, but I don’t know what" and loss of money, friendships, job etc. Yet when we really focus our mind and heart on the Lord Christ, these things fall into a distant mirage and the glory of the Lord drives the mists away as we focus beyond the mirage of time and see eternity through the eyes of faith.

I am learning to tell myself that the things that hurt so much are but a vapor and the reality lies just over the rainbow of God's promise. His promises are real and our pain comes from a misunderstanding of the "when" of them or the misapplication of them. Who among the sons of men has not, in the thrall of pathos, wept and cried out, "How long O' Lord must "this" (whatever this may be) continue?"

Powerful people, circumstances, even negative thinking, pale into insignificance at the truth of the Omnipotent One who watches and cares for, His being on record that He is mixing the sweet and bitter of life into something good as He promised in Romans 8:28

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Paul assures us that we can and must cling to the reality of the presence of Christ in order to have any victory whatsoever in this life below. Paul says in Hebrews 13:5-6:

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
