It was a dark night. The little boy Sam was sleeping. His master was sleeping in the next room. Silence prevailed everywhere. It was in this silent hour that he heard a voice.
Yes, Sam heard somebody calling him. He was not sure who was calling him. He thought his master may be calling him. He went to his master and asked him if he called him. His master said he did not call him and asked him to go back to sleep thinking that the little boy might have had some dream. Again there was a clear call. This time also the boy thought his master called him. This time also his master replied negatively. But this time the master was puzzled at the boy’s behavior.

“One night Eli was lying down in his room, half blind as he was. The lamp of God was still lighted and Samuel also lay in the house of Yahweh near the ark of God. Then Yahweh called, “Samuel, Samuel!” Samuel answered, “I am here” and ran to Eli saying, “I am here, did you not call me?”(1Samuel 3: 2-5)
It was when God called for the third time that Eli “realized that it was Yahweh calling the boy” (1 Samuel 3: 8)
“Then Yahweh came and stood there calling as he did before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel answered< “Speak, for your servant listens.” (1Samuel 3:10)

In silence and careful listening God spoke to Samuel. That is the way of hearing God’s voice. That is why the Psalmist sings, “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalms 46:10).

Just relax in silence and wait for God. In stillness and quietness listen and wait for Him to speak. Knowing God deeply and intimately requires such discipline. Silence is indispensable if we hope to add depth to our spiritual life.

If the pace and the push, the noise and the crowds are getting to you, it is time for you to stop the nonsense and find a place of solace to refresh your spirit. In such occasions, you should deliberately shun away from the din and noise and seek the Word of God. This will give room for you to slow down, get alone, pour out your overburdened heart and admit your desperate need for inner refreshment.

All of us can testify, God does not speak to the hurried, worried and distracted mind. It takes time to be alone with Him and His Word.
