The whimpering sounds of a small child drifted from a dark corner at the end of a narrow hall. Though she held her eyes tightly shut, she could still see her daddy’s fists pounding on her mother’s body. The hellish sounds had long since ceased, but still rang in her ears as did her mother’s pleas for mercy.
Shivering from fright, she dared not move. It was the smell of urine and the cold damp feel of her panties that reminded her of the need to decipher whether it would be safe to sneak slowly to the room she shared with her brothers.
She listened intently for any movement or noise that might indicate danger. Hearing only the rasp, laborious sounds of her daddy’s snoring, assuring her that he had finally passed out. With fear gripping her heart and determining her steps she slowly walked past the doorway that led to the room where her mother lay on the cold wooden floor only a few short steps from her fathers worn and ravaged body. As the young mother of eight struggled in vain for consciousness, her soft moans of pain mingled with the whimpering sounds of the little girl as she made her way down the narrow dimly lit hallway.

The partly opened door allowed enough light for her to see the dim outline of her two brothers as they lay frightened and spent. Her older brother by eleven months motioned for her to be quiet. It seemed that her younger brother Angelo finally gave into exhaustion as he slept peaceable in the embrace of her brother Jimmy.
Slipping out of her clothes, she aimlessly pulled from the mountain of laundry that lay in disarray around the small cramped room. Pulling over her head the first available garment she slid into bed beside her two siblings. As she lay in the soft comfort of the mattress she stared out into the murky darkness trying hard to allow her imagination to run free, to some how turn the shadowy objects looming about the room into wonderful happy things.
She would pretend as she did every night that God’s angels would be encamped around their room, allowing her and brothers to sleep in safety. This night her mind would not be solaced, even the quiet steady breathing of her baby brother could not reach her frightened, sad heart. Sensing her restlessness, Jimmy reached out to clasp her hand, giving her the only assurance available. She knew he was saying at least they had one another. Some where between the tears and darkness, fear gave way to exhaustion and she slept.
