Spirituality at my office -- no way! If you think that, then you deny one third of yourself when you walk into the building at 8 AM on a Monday morning. You park the part of you that is common to all outside and retrieved at quitting time, if you are not too weary to remember to pick it up again it at evening.

The Spirit in your spirit is the source of creativity "in- spirit-ation." Recall what Edison said about genius - it is 10 % inspiration and 90 % perspiration. How wasteful to set to work, doing the daily tasks that earn our daily bread without invoking the sustaining Spirit, source of all inspiration.

To live out the Shaker prayer: "Hands to work and heart to God." is the model. Treating co-workers, colleagues and those higher up on the totem pole with honor, a non-verbal acknowledgment, that same spirit resides in all hearts. Giving thanks for the spark of creativity that burns within and empowering that creativity to flourish, and in the difficult times, listening to the spirit within as the teacher of "First, do no harm."

There are always pressure and stresses in the workplace. Deadlines, profits and the little deaths of the conscious that happens in the course of a day's work. Bosses that should be in padded cells, rather than the corner office . At higher levels of management, keeping the competitive edge by coming as close as possible in the lighter shade of the legal grey - because the competitors are doing it or Wall Street wants to see a higher profit ratio. And the most difficult of all, terminating or being terminated.

Spirituality is not a big smilie face. It is a grounding in and connection with the Divine. The mystics, those great lovers of the Beloved, knew adversity. Some had their life's work taken away and given to another. Some faced tribunals for remaining steadfast in their service to the Divine. They were shunned, cast out, made invisible to the working world and knew the lack of income. Yet they persisted and not always willingly.

"Find your bliss" is not a complete answer. The bliss of non-duality was easier when "work" brought us into contact with nature and her seasons. But the umpteenth email, the sticky notes, the overflowing papers in the inbox are all seed and, as a part of creation, reflect the Divine One. Everything that surrounds you, all those drab carpeted partitions, harsh light, jangling noise are trappings of a different type of cathedral.- if you bring that spirit of yours through the doorway.
