Reflections Of A Mississippi Magnolia is an intimate look into the life of the Southern girl turned woman. The transparency of Mrs. Dorsey’s quiet but entertaining rural life is extremely enduring.

The poems take one back to nondigital hands-on experiences that all Southern folk should know. I found myself feeding chickens, shelling peas and swinging in grandma’s front porch again. It made me proud of my upbringing, my family’s heritage and especially to be a Mississippi Magnolia myself.

It if you are Mississippi bred and born you’ll enjoy the memories that Reflections will provoke.

Favorite Passage:

By time I got to the end of the book, I had 10 pages folded down for my favorite passage. It was hard but page 87 won.

Mississippi Through And Through
By: Patricia Neely- Dorsey

I could not be more a part of
the Mississippi landscape,
If I had sprouted right
out of the soil in some farmer’s garden,
Or bloomed from a magnolia tree
in the yard of some plantation home,
Or emerged, like Venus, from the murky waters
of some catfish pond.
I breathe Mississippi.
I move Mississippi.
I think Mississippi.
I feel Mississippi.
I am, simply,
Mississippi through and through.

Take Away Value:

If you have Mississippi in your blood then you’ll want to add this to your bookshelf.

“I’m Mississippi born, I’m Mississippi bred, And when I die, I’ll be Mississippi dead.”

Warnings:

Don’t buy this book if nostalgia isn’t your thing. Also don’t buy this book if you don’t like being transported back in time to where things were slower, simpler, less complicated, and sweeter than Southern sweet tea.
