Even Christians need to make decisions to be happy. It does not come automatically just because a person has committed his or her life to Christ, even though there are some Christians who seem to give you that impression.

Here are 9 principles, taken from my book, that help determine a person's level of happiness.

1. Refuse to allow others to make you feel responsible for their problems.
2. You are not totally responsible for another person's happiness. There comes a time when an individual has to decide that he or she is going to be happy.
3. You cannot allow yourself to expect that you will always meet the expectations of others.
4. You cannot and should not try to change anyone but yourself.
5. You do not have to allow other people to use your behavior as an excuse for them not changing. Just because you have a problem in some area of your life does not mean that someone else should use it to justify his or her problems.
6. Refuse to allow yourself to be weighed down by circumstances beyond your control.
7. A big part of choosing to be happy is maintaining a healthy self-image and taking care of your needs; it is setting boundaries.
Your needs and desires are important. You have dreams and goals that you need to pursue. You can reward yourself by doing fun things.
8. Do whatever makes you happy.
9. You must not allow yourself to be under the control of other people.
