Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday June 15, 2010

Lou Holz has long been one of my favorites. He is a winner, and has his share of losses and does not place blame and most of all, he can laugh at himself. In reading his books you get the idea that he has "been through it." And not only been through it, but learned from it and went on to the next thing.

The above does not sound like so much, but over the long haul try it and you will see how unusual the man is in the great scheme of things.

Coach Holz said:

"Show me someone who has done something, and I will show you someone who has overcome adversity."

In my lifetime I have watched our nation, even the Christians move from understanding, even welcoming life's challenges with faith and courage, to being a people who make careers of whining. I often catch myself thinking, "I'll bet this person actually sat at the dining room table and wrote this whine out."

Thomas a Kempis wrote:

"Many love Jesus so long as no adversities happen to them. Many praise Him and bless Him, so long as they receive any comforts from Him. But if Jesus hide Himself and withdraw a little while, they fall either into complaining or into too great dejection of mind."

The course of history has often been moved to God's path due to the man or woman who stared the adversary in the face with courage, many times a courage unto death, but courage nonetheless and the stars staggered, the earth moved on its axis and the hearts of a nation's people rose to the occasion for the glory of Christ. I have never read or heard a speech titled, "Cowards For Jesus," that moved anyone to action. Yet the accounts and stories of ordinary yet courageous men and women, even children of boldness in the Lord can and do move people who are enabled by Christ to rise to the heights of achievement and overcome the adversity no matter its devilish uniform.

I am told the hardest time for the warrior is the waiting for the moment of engagement. So it is with Christian Warriors, we tend to forget why we are wearing the whole armor of God and complain while we wait. Learning to wait with courage is essential to overcoming adversity. Adversity, a trial of faith is explained in 1 Peter 1:7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
