Thousands of years ago, a star beckoned three Wiseman, reputed to have come from Asia, Africa, and Europe to travel thousands of miles and pay homage to a child, who was in fact a King. The Wiseman brought gifts to the child- not because the child was in need of anything, but because humanity was in need of the gifts. The gifts symbolized specific purposes of Gods’ divine plan. I’ve done some research on what exactly each gift represented both naturally and spiritually for a Christmas program I did at my church in 2002. I would like to share what I found.
They were as follows:
Caspar –
From Europe, offered the Child Myrrh. Myrrh had medicinal purposes; one of which was to strengthen young children and rid them of worms, but the gift of Myrrh represented Christ’s mortality, and his roles of the suffering savior, and the great physician.
Melchior –
From Asia or Arabia. His gift of gold is believed to have financed the holy family’s flight into Egypt. It represents the immorality, purity, diversity, and kinship of Jesus Christ and his title of the Light of the World.
Balthasar-
From Africa. This Ethiopian brought the gift of frankincense, which was used, in perfumes and incense for the temple worship. Frankincense also represents the prayers of the faithful rising towards heaven, the gift of frankincense symbolizes sacrifice, Christ’s’ divine nature, and his titles of High Priest, and Son of God.
The spiritual symbolicness of these gifts lets us know that Christ was King- even as he lay in the manger wrapped in swaddling clothes.
The star beckoned, and the Wisemen prevailed throughout the night, obedient to the call of Christ shining brightly in the sky. Only after the star stopped over the place where Jesus lay- did they rest and rejoice. What they sought, they had found.
In addition, Wisemen still seek him today. An important thing to remember is that I am not talking about the Wisemen portrayed in traditional Christmas stories; but all men who have come to the realization of their need for the Savior in their lives.
The wisest decision that can be made in our lives is to seek Christ as the Wisemen did many years ago. Just as the star shone brightly that night, leading to the way of salvation and hope, Jesus stands before us, basking in the Glory of God, longing to lead us in the ways of righteousness.
Wiseman still seek him-
Not because of what he can give us, but because of who he is- the promised Messiah!
Wisemen still seek him-
Knowing that we can never repay him enough, or that we have no material gifts to offer him, for by him all things were created.
You see, we cannot “add” Jesus to our Christmas list – He is the list. He is the reason we celebrate. What could you possibly give to him to satisfy his desire for your obedience to his will?
You could not give him money-
The Bible says the cattle on a thousand hills are his. Was he not the one to tell his disciple to go look inside the fish’s mouth to get the money to pay taxes?
You couldn’t give him a gift certificate to a wonderful restaurant-
He has invited US to dine with HIM – the bible compels us to come where the feast of the Lord is going on, and where the table is spread. Was he not the one to feed five thousand with two fish and five loaves of bread? Did he not turn water into wine?
He doesn’t need front row seats to the opera-
When he was born a multitude, a host, of heavenly angels filled the dark sky and sang his praises. He has the best seats in the house- does he not sit on the right hand of the Father?
What about a nice vacation, you say to yourself?-
Where would he go? What has he not seen? Genesis, Chapter 1 tells us that in the beginning, the Earth was void and without shape, but when God stepped forward and said “let us” he, (Jesus) was there as well. This world is His creation. Jesus told His disciples He was going away to prepare a place for us, which is heaven. Moreover, the Bible informs us that it has not entered into the minds of man the things God has prepared for those that love the Lord.
What then shall we give unto the Lord? What can we render unto Him for all His blessings?
Follow the Wisemen in seeking the Lord, obediently following his call of salvation. Traveling through the darkness of this world, being led by the Light of the World. Seeking him through hard trials to deliverance; through grief to comfort; through despair to hope; through sickness to healing; through pain and suffering to victory and through death to eternal life.
And through all of this, all he requires of us are our hearts, minds, and complete obedience to him. And the only gift we can give him is a yes Lord spirit- Yes Lord, I will seek your face, Yes Lord, I will do your will, Yes Lord, I will follow you.
God gave us his only son, a gift that can never be repaid. Be wise. Seek the Lord while he may be found. Many have followed the star; have walked the distance never giving up. Will you join them in following the star? Wisemen still seek him… It’s not just a Christmas thing.
