Living a Life of Significance

A study once performed on death-bed conversations noted that the two most frequently discussed subjects at the end of one's life were relationships and contributions made in one's life. Success is about yourself but significance is about the impact you have on the lives of others.

In Acts 13 scripture records of a church at Antioch with certain prophets and teachers out of whom the Holy Spirit asked for Barnabas and Saul “for the work to which I have called them”. The church in the understanding of the mind of Christ laid hands on them with fasting and prayer and sent them forth in the Lord’s way. This transformed Paul’s life from a successful one (as an acknowledged academic and profitable tent maker) to a significant one. It resulted in the 3 missionary journeys, the extension of the frontiers of the Kingdom, the preaching the gospel unto the Gentiles, amazing miracles, the epistles to the churches, changed lives across Asia Minor, and ultimately the altering of the cause of history.

The definition of significance vary for different people but all come from the Holy Spirit. He it is who has the grand plan through generations (Ps 33:11). He is the “Lord of the harvest” who through prayer sends forth laborers to the work He has eked out for them (Matt 9:38). He knows what they need to do and in what part of the white fields for harvest they should occupy (Luke 19:13). For us to access this knowledge in the mind of God and establish “what is required of us”, we must come to the Holy Spirit and like Habakkuk “stand our watch” (Hab 2:1-6). We must set ourselves on our ramparts and watch to see what He would say to us for He will surely answer us when we seek Him (Jer 29:8). He will give the vision appointed for the set time, a vision that needs to be made plain, that will speak and surely come even if it tarries a while.

To make this vision plain, to birth the bearers, who would run when they read it, there must be a travailing in the place of prayer (Isa 66:7-9). We must pay our price in the place of prayer for there we are changed; there we are brought to the point of birth. God says for everyone who comes to the point of birth He will cause to deliver for “as soon as Zion travailed she brought forth her children”. And when we have prevailed in the place of prayer, once we have received His word, we must seize our moments (carpe diem) and set forth. We must set our face steadfastly towards our goal like a flint (Ps 18:29), because there will challenges, there will be opposition and there will temptations. We must be faithful in the stewardship of our task (1 Cor 4:2) irrespective of the outcome or results. Results do not necessarily matter because in the end, it is still all about Him (Rom 11:36). God is more particular about our obedience (1 Sam 15:22) and the results are His responsibility to fulfill. And for as long as we do not get weary and faint, for as long as we plant and water in our allotted portion of the harvest field, we would reap in due season (Gal 6:10) and God will certainly bring the increase (1 Cor 3:6).

Jesus with a deep sense of purpose committed Himself to living a life of significance (Heb 10:1-7). He understood the essence of His coming “a body thou hast prepared for me” and declared with zest “Lo! I come in the volume of books it is written of me to do thy will O God”. He set about His task saying “that I must work the works of Him who sent me while it is day…”and ultimately offered the supreme sacrifice on the cross. As a result of the action of this “one solitary life”, salvation came to the all men who would believe and we are sanctified today (Heb 10:10).

We live a life of significance by doing the right thing. True value is not measured by how much money you make but by the size of the problem you can solve. While we remain in pursuit of many worthwhile personal endeavours, we must always remember to invest in those around us. Pat L. Anderson describes 4 levels one passes through in life to achieve fulfilment – Struggling (the place where you are in desperate need for change to take place), Stability (you have finally made it through the struggling stage and life is starting to even out), Success (the stage where you have reached your dreams and goals, you have taken care of your needs). We must not be satisfied to remain here but move unto Significance - the place in life where you use your influence and your resources to make a difference in the lives of others.

Friend, in these uncommon times, God is shaking the nations of the earth to set the stage for the next wave in His program and is looking for men and women, not bound by denomination or creed, who in one faith would sign up to live a life of significance and fulfill His purpose. God is looking for those would be made ready to be slotted into their rightful positions just like the stones from the quarry site (1 Kings 6:7). He is setting up networks and alliances across the earth and stirring the hearts of men to discern His word for this great move. If you sense a burden in your spirit, if you wish to see God reign in this generation, if you feel or hear the Lord calling you to the task of this season, then rise up, make yourself available and be part of what God is doing in this season.
