Leaping Through Life

The expression “bahala na” is not uncommon for us Filipinos, since it is often used all over the archipelago. For a Filipino, going forward with something coupled with a citation of the above-mentioned phrase is actually going forward by a leap of faith. But what does it really mean to take a ‘leap of faith’? Clearly, the term is very subjective. No doubt about that. People from all over the world could each have varying interpretations of the same.

For me, taking a leap of faith is setting one’s mind onto something not having any clue as to what lies beyond, the only thing that matters is the belief that everything will be all right, that everything will fall into place just as exactly how you want them to be. Take note that the term used is not ‘ought’ but ‘want’. Of course, none of us has any control of the things that ought to be. In other words, taking a leap of faith is taking chances with high hopes for positive results because of the belief that the same will indeed result favorably. So that, whatever the result is, however things may end up, all these do not matter firsthand because the only thing that does matter is the fact that you had the courage of going forward with “it”. This is an optimistic and positive way of thinking in a spiritual vein. For us Christians, this could simply mean claiming what God had promised us.

I first encountered the phrase way back in 2007, I think from one of Judith Mc Naught’s novels or other historical romances I had been feeding on during my free times. It has caught my attention and let us just say, I have obsessed about it ever since. That was the same time when my family and I had to think of a new name for our school. As a backgrounder, we opened up a pre-school in 2006 and when an opportunity for expansion into First Grade came up, the original ‘Lil Kids Learning Center had to be changed. The family has pooled in several alternate names for the school but for some reasons, none could not be approved until Leap of Faith Learning Center came about. This name is perfect considering the circumstances our family was in when the school was just being organized. It was truly a big leap of faith that my family, especially my Mother, took. The school is only one of the many blessings our family has been receiving. Were it not for that big “leap”, our family could not have survived to this day the financial distress we have been experiencing.

I am sure we all have some “leaping” stories to tell, even without us noticing it. Big or small, they all serve the same purpose – they bring us closer to God as we begin to recognize and acknowledge his power, that nothing escapes Him. But this could only work well if in return, we believe that He can and He will. Let us all be like the children we once were. Let us not be afraid to stumble or fall knowing that even without our parents in sight, deep within us, we believe that we will walk through life unscathed. Go take a leap! Have faith that everywhere you go, in the end, God is there to catch you, to break your fall and to lift you back up.
