Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday May 6, 2010
This is one Mother's Day that I suppose I will long remember as it is the first my 96 year old Mom will spend in a nursing home. She faired well until just a while ago, and then…
She has moments when she is lucid and then the fog of the years rolls back in, much like fog at seaside on an early fall morning. Mom is doing well in the home as long as they tell her what she wants to hear. If the instruction is not what she wants to do, the Old German rises up and; I'm sure you get the drift.
As I mused on Mom finally forced into surrender, I thought of the enormous part mothers are called upon to play in the formation of the young. I was reminded how unforgiving the children can be to the one who went to the shadow of the valley on the child's behalf. I sure know I went through a terrible period of living in the iron castle of unforgiveness toward her for real and imagined wrongs suffered in the long ago.
Through the course of my life Mom has never been able to figure me out, but this in no way demeans her as the best minds that academia has produced cannot grasp just what makes Ole Larry tick. After counseling me psychologists have made personal appointments with psychiatrists. After staring into mirrors and wondering, "Why am I like this?" I still don't know why. Of course I now stand in front of mirrors and wonder, "Where did my hair go and why?"
In the course of getting things in some sort of order, I brought Mom's eight year old, 6 pound Pocket Poodle home to Indiana with me. The little dog rode on my lap for over 12 hours. Lady Marie immediately bonded with The Great Blonde and my suggestion that this is due to her similarity to Mom, did NOT win any laurels for me. Oh well. I guess it hurts a French/Indian girl to be likened to a pure blooded German. Now each time I look at the dog I think of how dearly Mom loved the creature. I should have been a dog. Oh well, I received the treatment.
To say that Mom lived a hard, even tough life is understatement. She has buried four husbands. Due to this repeated trauma she assured me on Wednesday last that under no circumstance is she going to remarry, just to bury another man. She was serious. Bless her. If perchance she changes her mind, I hope her choice is filthy rich and has a real heart for a certain poor, but very sincere Baptist preacher.
While in Embassy Suites in Newark, Delaware I noted the following from Henry Ward Beecher:
"What the mother sings to the cradle goes all the way down to the grave."
