Her Witness
His coffee was finally ready and he sat on the railing of the deck looking over what had become home for him, a small but well built cabin that overlooked Wolf Creek which was babbled just below the hill it was peaceful knowing he had again come home. This morning Rolly had a new kind of peace that he was feeling, he could not understand what it was but something was different today. As he looked over at the Golden Horn, the mountain that had become like a century on duty in his cabin setting He thought of God and His creation. He thought of the order of life, God, Family, Friends, relationships and the gift that The Heavenly Father had given to each person.
It was a testimony that he had heard many times over the past years but failed to hear and see what it truly meant until he thought about all that had transpired this past week. It was like it was new to him this time, Iskwiw had uttered a few final words to him in Cree that stuck with him...ÓKisakihitinÓshe repeated over and over again as she pointed to Rolly and then to the heavens...ÓKisakihitinÓ she said as she pointed to the heavens and then to Rolly. Then she said the word "love" and smiled as she quietly walked over the hill from the gravelled runway, that was the last time he saw this elderly lady whom he had been so touched by. She knew something about him that he had been searching for for many years and yet he failed to understand it completely.
Iskwiw is the Cree word for "female" a name that had been given to her as a baby as it was tradition in those days the father in the Cree household would name the children. She had explained that her father was a simple man, having little education and that was the first name that came to mind. He and his wife had only had boys prior to her.
Iskwiw was raised in northern Canada in a place called Old Crow, one the banks of the Porcupine River in the Yukon. They lived off the land and were totally dependent on the migration of the famous Porcupine Caribou Herd that travelled through twice a year.
I met Iskwiw on a flight to Edmonton, she had been recently diagnosed with Cancer and required further diagnosises. It was here that she learned she had very little time left, she had refused further treatment that would only extend her life by a few months. Instead she choose to pass the treatment onto someone younger, someone who would benifet more that she would. Iskwiw thought she was about 86 years old, age was not something that mattered much. What mattered to her was her relationship with Jesus, family and loving all whom God placed in her life.
The above is a brief exert from another novel that I have just completed, as I wrote I came to realize the impact this little lady had on my life long before I became a Christian. Iskwiw like many before her and many after will speak the same words to those whom are lost.
I know that Iskwiw is looking down at all those who she touched here on earth and awaiting the day when she can again speak the word "Kishakihitin" and simply smile knowing that I understood.
