OK. Think back….WAY back to the days of Mongooses, Schwinns and Huffies! Have you ever been a “passenger” on the back of a friend’s bike? What were we thinking???! We gave complete control of our well-being over to another snot-nosed, ill-coordinated, unconcerned child, AND we thought nothing of it! As I got older, the appeal of giving someone else absolute power over my physical state (and location!) lessened. Soon I couldn’t even handle watching other people do it! There’s just something about trusting someone else with my life that creates a knot in my stomach the size of a 4 door sedan!

Well, I feel like I’ve been on the back some kid’s BMX for a few years now! I’m a bit of a control freak so this whole ‘trusting the Lord’ thing doesn’t come easy for me AT ALL! Now, don’t get me wrong, my faith is entirely in my Heavenly Father. I know He will ALWAYS work things out for the good of those who love Him. (Wanna read about it? Read this: Romans 8:28!) It’s that be patient, wait on the Lord, big picture, hand it over to Him thing I’m not so good with. It seems I’m more comfortable doing everything myself. I’ll gladly take His direction; I’d just rather have MY hands on the handlebars and MY feet on the breaks!

This is something that the Lord really convicted me on while I was in the hospital with our twins. What a humbling experience. There was NOTHING we could do to save our babies. I had no choice but to acknowledge my human frailty; my shortcomings; my weakness; my total dependency on my Father. I begged Him to let me keep my babies. It turned out that what I wanted did not fall in line with what God knew was best in His infinite wisdom. I thought the “better” outcome was obvious. I was wrong.

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. {1 John 5:14-15}

Did you catch the fine print there? **ACCORDING TO HIS WILL**

Ever since that heartbreaking experience, I’ve had my eyes closed and my arms wrapped tightly around Him as he pedals along taking me here and leading me there. I know I’m not in control, and instead of taking comfort in His grace, I’m just plain afraid. But lately, I’ve been questioning my method. Am I doing the right thing…just standing here…terrified of where He will take me next? No. I’m not. Psalm 37:5 says this: Let the Lord lead you and trust him to help. {CEV}

The operative words there are “trust” and “help”. We have to TRUST that when He pedals us up to that cliff, His HELP may be 5 feet down or 5 inches from the ground, but if we follow His lead, help IS on the way. We must make a decision. Will we stand on the edge of the cliff, scared and confused with a parachute strapped on in case we fall or will we dive head first, eyes wide open, into whatever God has planned for us, TRUSTING He has our best interest in mind?

We have to be so closely connected with our Savior that His will becomes our own – that’s what we pray for. That’s what we expect. And with that, we accept that no matter which bike trail He chooses for us, He will get us through the potholes, over the bumps, and across the broken bridge safely to our Heavenly destination.

I’m choosing to JUMP! I don’t know where He’s taking me right now, but I know God has equipped me with what I need to make the most of this journey – for Him.

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. {Hebrews 10:23}
