Larry Lilly's Letter Monday April 26, 2010

While with a group of "mixed" clergy, by mixed I mean a variety of persuasions concerning about everything but the essentials, the news came concerning famous and rich, Jennifer Knapp, from millions of Christians having bought her albums has "come out of the closet."

Let me state at the outset that I, in my near cloistered life, have never heard of the girl/boy/ whatever, so I am in no great distress of soul. My ears/eyes did perk up a wee bit when I read the following statement in The Christian Post:

"I think it's going to be shocking and feel like a betrayal to some people who live their spiritual lives through the music they listen to," Jennifer Knapp .

Shocking did not get my attention, as hardly a day passes but that some Christian Icon admits some form of homosexuality. Another admits a continuing affair and still another announces that they are Asexual. Ho hum. There is help for those who want it, but anymore most offenders in these areas have an in your face attitude and monkey headed "Christians" continue to add to their riches.

A sense of betrayal? Not really for any hypocrisy is a betrayal of trust to one degree or another. Humans will be humans and that's only one reason for so many verses and passages being addressed to redeemed humans. I do wonder when someone is going to sue such ones for obtaining money and following due to false advertising. Fraud is fraud and the opp for suit is open for seven years after discovery.

The phrase that really caught my attention was "to some people who live their spiritual lives through the music they listen to."

Many simply pass this remark off as more ramblings from an entertainer type airhead. Yet a statement from famed British Historian etc, the late Arnold Toynbee jumped into my near empty mind and really set me to musing. Toynbee said:

"Civilizations tend to live at the level of their music."

Attempts to get a handle on true New Testament music is a gargantuan task to be sure and I must admit I know of no group anywhere near this ideal. But to admit that to "live your spiritual life through the music you listen to" is begging for an inner person blowout, and blowouts along highways, especially the highway of life can be disastrous.

Tis unlikely that a heart in continued rebellion against clear sacred teaching can over the long haul produce songs that truly honor our Lord Jesus Christ. This truth is well expressed by David in Psalms 37:31:

"The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide."
