An Easter To Remember

The Easter I was 14, we were in the middle of the Cold War. John F. Kennedy had just become President but being a family of color was difficult and there was no money for me and my 11 brothers and sisters for Easter clothing. But mom ingeniously used hand-me-downs, second hand purchased clothes and clothing made from patterns some which were copied from patterns borrowed from neighbors and friends cut from old newspapers became our Easter finery. The old clothing was cleaned magnificently and the homemade clothes were the most beautiful shirts, trousers and dressed I had ever seen!

Easter morning Mom dressed or had the older children help dress the younger ones in our new clothing. Boys sometimes being boys, I began some horseplay with a younger brother until a collar was torn in the melee. I was ashamed of the mess I had caused. Mom, on the other hand, took one look, quickly removed the shirt and went to the sewing area. Within minutes, the collar was back on as though nothing had occurred.

I was so relieved to know that she knew my bad habits, anticipated it and forgave me for my sinful horseplay even though I really deserved punishment for my wrongdoing.

God knows my sins—every last one of them. He foresaw my shortcomings long before I was born. He loved and still loves me so very much that He sent His only Son, Jesus, to save me knowing that I would sin again and again but forgives me every time I asked. That is a comforting thought!


Prayer: Almighty Father, thank you for anticipating my weaknesses, sin and sending Your Son, Jesus, to redeem me from my ignorance and insolence.
