Thoughts from Isaiah to Me

To some this Scripture from Isaiah may sound like a “stretch of the imagination”; and I am sure this is not what Isaiah meant at the time….but it remarkably fits to me. Please indulge me for a moment as I consider these verses.

Isaiah 1:21-23. “ How is the faithful city become an harlot! It was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers. Thy silver has become dross, thy wine mixed with water: Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followed after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither, doth the cause of the widow come unto them.”

My own heart cries out because I can see the “faithful city” of verse 21 as our own dear America that is becoming as a “harlot“. Like Israel of old, we have abandoned our first love…the God of our forefathers. America used to be, as the verse describes, a place where people could receive honest and fair judgment. Justice is now slow to be executed. We actually harbor criminals, giving them more “rights” than the people they have victimized. In far too many cases murderers are harbored for years in the prisons.

People, even unbelievers, had respect for God. Never would they have thought to defile a church building or cemetery. Not so today. There is no “righteousness” (no respect for life or property) among our people. Even the children and youth of our nation show no respect for life. They commit horrible crimes against one another and even against their parents. Serious crime is rampant in our schools.

Nearly every night the news begins with, “there was another murder in our city today”. The crimes against children is frightening! How can God “bless an America” that kills our babies, kidnaps and tortures our children. Grown men and women brutalize and sexually molest children …sometimes even their own flesh and blood.

Our “faithful city”, America is on a “slippery slide to hell”

Verse 22 speaks of our “silver becoming as dross and our wine mixed with water”. We have become so greedy that there is no more integrity in our dealings with one another. Honesty in advertising is a “joke”. Products are “watered” down in anyway they can be to make the product “cheaper” than it is advertised to be. Even in dealings with such things as the construction industry (that can be “life threatening” if inferior materials are use), cuts are made in concrete used in buildings and roads.

Our “princes” are indeed rebellious! Hands are out for bribes and favors even to the highest in our country’s leaders. How can our congressmen, in all good conscience, vote themselves raises and take pensions for the “rest” of their lives, when the people are suffering in the ways many are today. What makes a congressman guilty of fraud and bribery and serving a prison sentence be entitled to his retirement and other “perks”. They are not concerned with the voice of the people. Their only concern is to be re-elected and for “their party to stay in control”.

I believe that instead of “God Bless America”, we need to cry out in repentance, “God have mercy on America.” In spite of it all, I love this country. That is why our condition makes me so sad.

Thank you Emily. This is not just America, but the whole world. I have seen all this happening in my own country, South Africa, and the evil is escalating. The only way we will be saved , is to cry out in repentance to God.

Great article. America does need to repent and recognize God as the final authority just as the founding fathers intended. It seems as tho money has become the deciding factor in too many areas. We all need to pray for our nation. GOD BLESS YOU
