I was speaking with a friend of the family not too long ago, telling him that I was writing a book about the fatherless. I went on to describe how the fatherless are not simply the African orphans we picture in our minds, but also the child in the foster care system, the prisoner, the pregnant teen, the adolescent on drugs, the child whose parents are divorced, and the high school drop out.

He said that he didn't care about the fatherless. My six-year-old daughter, who had been listening to the conversation, boldly said, "Maybe you don't know God."

It seems as though the more I get to know God, the more I see the widow, the orphan, the prisoner, and the poor.  Everything about God is backwards to my human ways.  I'm starting to get it.  He's less into the big show as he is into the little kindness.  Someone giving one cent gives more than another giving a thousand dollars.  He's just as present in the dirty back streets as he is in the nice clean churches.

I really wanted to go to a church concert a few weeks back and had been looking forward to it for some time.  As fate would have it, I didn't end up going, but instead visited with a widow at a nearby home for the aged.  As I was leaving, I was thinking, Maybe God wanted me here more than he wanted me there, anyway.
