The Shadow of His Wings

"Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me; for my soul trusteth in Thee. Yea, in the shadow of Thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast" (Psalm 57:1).

God has provided a refuge for me—in the shadow of His wings. Sometimes my circumstances overwhelm me.

What can I do when my mobile home starts falling apart? Two windows in my living room cracked open, letting in the winter air. The outside light quit working. The door lock wore out. Someone could have come in and robbed me or worse.

Above all these things, I encountered insults, disrespect and a missing car. Vandals came in and my bedroom looked like a tornado struck it. My soul bowed down under all this. I threw myself upon my bed and wept. My heart felt as though it would break. I thought, I can't take anymore. What can I do?

In such times, I can give up to despair and sulk. Then my soul bows down. I may say in my heart, It’s no use. I give up. At times I feel like doing just that.

God caressed me and reminded me of His Word. David said, “Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me” (Psalm 138:7).

At last, I sought refuge under His wings. In the midst of all my trials, God gave me joy in my heart. With joy came the spirit of praise instead of the spirit of heaviness—God's remedy for depression.

After God gave me joy, my car returned safe and sound. Friends helped me clean up the mess in my bedroom. I took care of necessary repairs. Some day all my calamities will be over. Oh! May I keep looking up until that day. In the meantime may I trust under His wings. He will deliver me.

What do we do when calamities strike us? Some get bitter and turn away from God. Others trust God and draw closer to His wings. What will our response be?

Most blessed Lord, I thank Thee for a place of refuge. Help me to keep trusting under Thy wings. In Jesus' name. Amen.
