Jehovah-Shalom
Jehovah-Shalom is Hebrew, which means the LORD our peace.
Scripture speaks of peace, yet, there are various types of peace. There is peace with God and the peace of God.
Do you ever fear the future or fear the present? I do. Scripture offers hope though. Often times, I lose my peace when I ponder on the circumstances of life. I become fearful. Then I remember Scripture verses that speak of the peace of God and how to have it and I am encouraged. Do you ever think that way? I think many people do.
Years ago, I was a nanny for a Jewish family. The father was an orthodox rabbi. Often I would hear the family greet one another by saying” shalom”, in much the same way the Apostle Paul greeted the believers in various NT books when he wrote” peace be unto you”.
Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusteth in thee. This is speaking of having peace of mind and heart. The word perfect is speaking of completeness.
There is so much dissension in this world, peace often seems out of reach, yet Scripture says we can have it. However, we must keep our mind stayed or fixed on The LORD in order to obtain the type of peace Scripture is speaking of in this verse.
Phillipians 4:7 And the peace of God which passeth all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. The Greek word for peace in this verse is Eirene, which means rest or quietness. The Greek word for keep is Phroureo which means to guard, protect, or hem in. That’s pretty amazing!
Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts to the which also ye are called …
Jesus spoke of peace as well. John 14:27 Jesus said, Peace I leave with you, my peace give I unto you, not as the world giveth give I unto you, Let not your heart be troubled neither let it be afraid. Jesus doesn’t offer the type of peace the world offers, which is temporary, his peace is complete.
John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. Notice in this verse the promises Jesus makes? He promises tribulation in the world, but peace in him.
Romans 5:1 Therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace through our Lord Jesus Christ.
The peace in this verse is the type we obtain when we trust in the shed blood of Christ to take away our sins and declare us to be justified. Justification means he declares us righteous.
2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. In other words, he took our sins upon himself and gave us his perfect righteousness. It is so amazing, many people cannot believe that we as believers have received this standing, yet it is true. Right standing with God is what brings us peace with God. We are no longer enemies of God, but are brought into a right relationship with him through his blood.
Application: The LORD is our peace, Jehovah-Shalom. Do you have peace with God? Do you have the peace of God? What causes you to lose your peace?
Prayer: LORD, help me to have peace in my heart and mind that comes from trusting in you, rather than fear of what I observe around me, and within me. In Your Name amen.
