Just returned from a walk through our snow filled neighborhood, all the while pondering a few things concerning this extraordinary day. In one twenty four hour period, this writer experienced, as he is sure you have, thoughts of wonder and muscles of soreness.
At midnight, he found his yard filling up with snow, at that point slightly under a foot. He awakened to a yardstick that recorded just under two. The last of five excursions to keep ahead of the rising beast ended at 3 am and he settled in for a short rest at the bottom of the hour.
One rotation of the hands of time hence, his slumbering was interrupted by the resonating claps of thunder and brilliant flashes of lightning that over arched the sky and fell upon the ear and the eye. One was struck by the dichotomy - above the stillness, above the muffled silence of a falling snow, the power and voice of God danced and shouted across the canvas of the heavens.
As I now reflect, it was perhaps here that February 6, 2010 became something more than a freshly etched date in the record book of storms. It was then that God revealed to me afresh the wondrous truth that He speaks to His creation in a myriad of ways, all marvelous in their impact upon those with listening souls. Truly, the Almighty Voice stills the faltering chords of man and leaves the mortal in dumbstruck awe.
Daylight broke upon a landscape erased and remade in the image of the sovereign hand of Providence. All was transformed before the eyes of millions and the multitude was powerless before the power of His choice. Argument and grumbling made fruitless, selfish purpose and the tyranny of time negated before a humbled acknowledgment of His purpose and plan.
The work and rest of the day progressed, but slowly, in the presence of twenty six inches of the white. Neighbor helped neighbor and the snow continued to fall. Finally, just before sunset, the flakes subsided and the clouds lightened, then parted, revealing the ethereal beauty of the blue and the ravishing rays of a glorious sun.
As I trudged through the streets of my quiet village town tonight, I thought of all of these things and thanked the God who made the snow, the sky, the thunder and the lightning, the stars upon which I gazed, and the soul that can contemplate the Source of them all. My walk had ended, as had also, a day of days - but my thoughts danced on, rising to the God who made us, the One who rules over us in love, wisdom, and power. Indeed, my thoughts, even now, still twirl joyously upward - I pray they always will, even when the snow is gone.
